If it's a lap yes you do have a back light but that isn't necessarily the problem. Laps have fn (function) keys that you may have hit accidentally. Look at your keyboard for any keys that may look like they have something to do with the brightness which you would hit the fn key first then the brightness key. You could also try to boot to the bios screen and "set defaults". It's also possible you've turned on the fn key to use an alternate monitor. You may be able to boot into safe mode and bypass any changed settings should this be the situation.
If nothing helps shine a light on your monitor if its an lcd and it it's the backlight you will still be able to see a screen just not lite up.

My Samsung SyncMaster 740N occasionally turns itself off. Timing varies and the condition varies. Usually the screen just goes black - from seconds to hours after it is turned on - the blue LED remains...

This could be because of the 'eco' friendliness of the monitor. Basically a lot of monitors are designed to turn off into a low power state when not in use so to preserve power and life of the monitor. I would return the monitor as the sensors that control this seem to be broken in your monitor.

Worked fine this am now black screen blue power button

This is usually the inverter/power board failing. If it's under warranty, you should return for repair/replacement, if not, you can search for online the inverter/power supply board - it can be as expensive as finding a good clean used monitor, so many people choose to not go the repair route.

Good luck!

Your AUTO settings button is stuck in! Try tapping on it a few times. Otherwise you may have to take the frame apart so you can get at the button.

The front panel switches seem to be the culprit.
If you are technically sound you maybe able to solve problem by opening monitor and clean front panel switches or replace them.

Monitor Display Problem.

Like most of these LCD monitors it is more than likely a PSU problem to do with the Electrolytic Capacitors, These in all probability will be faulty.. there are usually about 4 - 6 from 1000uF to 100uF replace ALL with same or better.

SCREEN IS ALL BLACK

First of all go for monitor self test. disconnect your monitor cable from the back of ur CPU and turn on ur monitor, if you see some colour(red, blue, green etc) boxes in any shape that means your monitor is fine, make sure colours are not hazy. If this succeeds that check the pins of the monitor connector, make sure pins are not bent or broken. Just Give it a try ... Cheers!!
