So okay, her's a simple tips
1. check the battery if it still have enough power to do your task, when the battery is nearly empty you cannot click or the shutter, the zoom lens was closing. you have to charge the battery and replace it a newly one. so power on again and try to capture some shots.
2. check your Memory status is its full you can't take that shot anymore because your memory is full. at time you need to back up your data on the memory and i recommend taht you format it using your cam. I'm your camera usually connected in your pc that is why it also prone to contamination of virus inside your pc data. and this virus can also contribute to affect the system in your camera.
3. iF you can do some cleaning with your camera, use brush to eradicate dust or sticky substance can prevent it from opening the lens and shutter.
4. if you have the manual for camera that good read it and understand some minor operational procedure. do this when your unit is off.
5. avoid to use any liquid material that could harm your unit.

I have sony DSC-S500 digital camera i want to know how to take a photograph using self timer thank you Regards Sailaja

Hi,

For capturing the images using Self Timer, press the Down Arrow control button continuously to select the desired mode. You can set the timer for 10 seconds and 2 seconds by pressing the continuously, If we press the button again the Self Timer will be turned off.

Press the Shutter button, the self-timer lamp flashes and a beep sounds until the shutter operates. To cancel the self-timer, press the down arrow button again. You can redice the risk of blur by using the 2-second delay self-timer.

Good Luck!

Don't know what buttons on back of camera are for.

Besides the auto-flash mode, you can select fill flash, flash off, self-timer, and nighttime-view with or without flash.
Press the MODE-SELECTOR BUTTON until the desired indicator appears on the LCD PANEL.
c3015.gif Fill flash and flash off modes remain selected after you take the picture. To cancel the selection, press the mode-selection button or close and reopen the lens cover/flash to return to the auto-flash mode.
Fill flash
c3014.gif When bright light indoors or outdoors comes from behind the subject (backlighting), dark shadows (especially on faces) may occur. Use fill flash to lighten these shadows.
  1. Open the LENS COVER/FLASH to raise the flash and to turn the camera ON.
  2. Press the MODE-SELECTOR BUTTON repeatedly until the FILL-FLASH INDICATOR appears on the LCD PANEL.
  3. Frame your subject within the VIEWFINDER EYEPIECE.
  4. Partially depress the SHUTTER BUTTON. When the FLASH/CAMERA-READY LAMP turns off and the fill-flash indicator on the LCD panel stops blinking, fully depress the shutter button to take the picture.
Flash off
c3013.gif When you do not want to use the flash, especially indoors where flash is prohibited, such as in theaters and museums, or when you want to take twilight scenes or distant subjects that are beyond the flash range, or capture the ambiance of existing light, use the flash-off feature. Use a tripod or place the camera on another firm support, and use high-speed film because the shutter speed in these situations will most likely be slow.
  1. Open the LENS COVER/FLASH to raise the flash and to turn the camera ON.
  2. Press the MODE-SELECTOR BUTTON repeatedly until the FLASH-OFF INDICATOR appears on the LCD PANEL.
  3. Frame your subject within the VIEWFINDER EYEPIECE.

    • To cancel the self-timer selection before the shutter releases, close the flash.
    • The self-timer automatically turns off after the shutter releases.
Night-view with flash
c3012.gif In this mode, the camera balances the flash and existing light exposure so you can take beautiful pictures of people at sunset or at night. Use a tripod or place the camera on another firm support, and use high-speed film because the shutter speed at night will most likely be slow.

How do I set the timer?

To set the timer, you simply need have the camera in ready mode (as if you were going to take a picture normally), then on the back where you have the four directional pad buttons, with the camera facing you press the left button once and you should see a circle with the number 10 in it. If not, press again. This is the timer for 10 seconds. If your press the left button again, you will see a circle with a 2 in it. This is the 2-second timer.

Now choose which one you want, the 10 or 2-second timer. Once you have decided, press the shutter button fully and you will start to hear beeping. This is the count down sound. Now depending on if you have the flash setting to go off, once the beeping and the self-time indicator on the front of the camera stops flashing, your picture has been taken.

To take another timed photo, you must repeat the same steps again.

Hope that helps.
