Question about Seagate Momentus 5400.6 (ST9250315AS) 250 GB SATA Solid State Drive (SSD)

1 Answer

Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB ST9500325AS external drive, when plugged in, starts beeping for a short while then Windows 7 detects it, but can't initialize it in the Disk Management screen. I do not hear drive spinning. It was working yesterday, nothing unusual happened. I had also properly removed via "safely remove hardware" option. I've got all my data on it - is the data gone?

If you try to initialize it, you will destroy your data.
Try another PC or better still a Mac. You may be able to read it but it should spin up otherwise it could be the usb connector.

What software did you use for the cloning?
Ghost is the preferred method.
Be sure to choose a disk to disk clone, not a partition clone.
It sounds like you may have created a 20G partition and left 40G unallocated.
Partition Magic may also take care of the problem, if you have access to a copy.

Some laptop manufacturers use the 4 pins to the side of the data connection to force Master / Slave. Do you have a jumper shorting 2 of these pins? If so, remove the jumper and try it again in your external caddy. Had this problem 2 weeks ago with a Toshiba notebook having the Blue Screen of Death. Removed the jumper and then the disk worked perfectly!! Strange but True.

Cheers

Seagate external drive Momentus 5400.3 is not recognized in my Win 7 laptop.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. I pulled the seagate 2.5"

Hello,

When you use external adapters to plug drives into USB ports the drive needs to be set for mast not slave. The internal drive is one one channel and external drive is on a different channel so neither drive is a slave, both are masters with not slave drive present. Try removing the jumper you installed and try the drive, it should be seen because all windows XP or later do not need drivers for USB drives.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

EXACTLY what error-message do you get?

When you double-click that entry in Device Manager, and click "reinstall drivers", allow Windows to connect to the Internet to look for a device-driver for the USB-to-disk-drive adapter (no device-driver is needed for the disk-drive itself).
