    HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer.

I have reset the phototray as per the instructions but the error persists. There is also a clunking noise when the printer is turned on.

  • Peter May 19, 2011

I have reset the photo tray as per the instructions and the error message continues to display on the printer. Resetting the tray does not fix the problem.

I think to fix this problem, I need instructions on how to pull the printer apart and reassemble the drive gears. A gear appears to have become misaligned.

What more do you want to know?

  • Peter May 19, 2011

I have already tried doing a reset. I have actually let it sit for SEVERAL DAYS without power.

The "Photo tray problem" message is still displayed, even with the photo tray fully inserted. Even with and without photo paper in the photo tray. It wont let you do normal printing until the photo tray problem is fixed.

The device is connected via WiFi not USB - there is no USB to unplug,

    1. Exactly the same error is display on the computer that is display on the printer screen.
    "Photo Tray Problem
Lift the output tray up and verify that the photo tray is pushed in until it stops, then lower output all the way down. Press OK button on the printer to continue printing."

    2. The printer does not feed paper. It won't do any printing until the message is cleared.

    3. Yes I am just trying to print. The scanning function still works. I can't be bothered with fax.

    4. Please refer to "Comments and Clarifications" and above for the error message. I only have 10 sheets of A4 paper in the printer. As mentioned in the "Comments and Clarifications" I have also tried with and without photo paper.

(!) I think what I need to fix this is, some instructions on how to pull the printer apart and reset the photo tray gearing. Does any one have access to the HP maintenance manuals? (!)

I was hoping to get an answer off FixYa for $12.00 so I could fix it myself.

If I do buy a new printer it wont be a HP. When I asked HP about this problem they just said "It is out of warranty", they didn't even suggest what I could do to try and fix it. Very bad customer service. I also got the same response "It is out of warranty" when I reported a bug a in the printer driver when printing PDF files containing graphics. Very bad customer service HP!

    //

I was hoping someone who had access to the HP maintenance manuals could tell me how to pull the printer apart and access the gear that is misaligned or whatever.

Just saying "take you screwdriver to the printer" is not the quality of answer I expected from FixYa. This error message is quite widely spread over the Internet, surely someone has step by step instructions on how to fix it.

I do not have $500 at the moment for a new multifunction printer.

Hello.

It's possible that there is a very small piece of printer paper jammed. Look above the print cartridges, especially above the cartridges and to the left. If necessary, use a flashlight.

Also, use a can of compressed air in and around the same area.

Hope this helps.

When you start the system you should here your lamp and ink cartridges spool and test. You are listening for a small bump sounds followed by a smooth or whirling whisk sound. If you hear the system bumping and grinding and the sound remains on one side of the machine then you have a drive issue with either your scanner lamp or your ink cartridge. Being that it is giving you the error on the scanner, it is problem that one. Try this
Go into your menu and select and confirm every paper setting. with the lid lifted up, power the unit on and look for movement in these key areas. You may need to do this several times to narrow down the location of the problem. If indeed the drive systems are in need of service the purchase of a new system will be warranted. you will easily spend $60-150 to repair your system with a 30-90 day warranty or you can purchase a new one of equal or enhanced quality for the same price and have your new product warranty and the piece of mind of a working machine.
I know you may have wanted a fix for this, so i am just gonna tell you the secret to printer economics. Take your screwdriver and start systematically removing large cover and top mounted panels. Power the unit on and off repeatedly while trying different environmental variables. (i.e. unplug everything from the unit but the power cord and try disconnecting components at their cardbus and cable lvl and see if the system behaves more according to its desired specs. This will tell you that the removed component**(just do one at a time and replace it, then when you do them all, select one, disconnect it and leave it disconnect and systematically disconnect each of the other components, not having more than the two disconnected components at one given time) then progress to two components disconnect, and systematically do the same until all components have been tested.
This is a time consuming process but will let you know one thing, IS THIS PRINTER WORTH SAVING!!)
after opening the case, listening and watching for "hang ups" in the drive systems, component isolation trial and error troubleshooting, and a little patience will get you a long way.
GOOD LUCK AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND

Welcome to Fixya

Try to perform soft reset the printer. Please see procedure:

Unplug both ends of the power cord and both ends of the USB cord. Let the printer set for several hours without disturbing it so it will reset itself internally. It will not do this with power applied.

Plug the power cord into the unit, then plug the other end into the wall outlet or a protected power strip. Plug the USB cord into the computer, then plug the other end into the printer. Allow the printer to initialize on its own for a few minutes until it calms down, then follow the on-screen prompts.

It will tell you to load the paper tray and the photo tray whether they are loaded or not. Ignore that unless it is out of paper. The photo tray does not need to be loaded for the printer to use normal paper.

Thank you for using Fixya!

    Hi,

Tthank you for clearing that this is not a network issue, does it give you an error at all on you computer?

You mentioned that there is a clucking noise when you try to print. and you tried resetting the mprinter also left the printer a few days without turned OFF still you get the same error from the photo tray.

If I may ask does the printer feed papaer? from what I understand since it is the photo tray that is causing the issue then it must not be feeding paper in the printer correct?

Basing on what you mentioned that you hear a clucking sound then most probably the photo tray on the printer must be somehow disconnected from the mechanism inside that feeds the paper, possible that is the clucking noise that you are hearing, the photo tray will really give an error if the rollers do not detect the tray being lifted to be able to feed paper into the machine.

The tray I am speaking of iss the bottom tray where papaer is put on for printing not the output tray, also if there is a way for your to check the rollers that pull the paper from the bottom tray to feed in the printer to make sure that all are in tack and is properly aligned.

I believe you are just trying to print right? this not an issue with trying to fax or scan on this All-in-one printer.

What is the Error message? Automatic Document Feeder Failed to Load if this is the error make sure not to load more than 50 sheet of A4 paper on the photo tray or paper tray to avoid errors on the photo tray feeding paper and if you are using legal paper the long ones make sure not to load more than 35 ok this will also cause errors on the printer, also make sure the guides are properly adjusted to the paper for proper alignment.

I believe this is all I can think of right now regarding your concern, for further info please reply so I can check if there is nything else I can provide for further assistance.

I hope this will be of help,

    mvincentc

    Hi,

Printers Sometimes display Errors even if there really isn't anything faulty on it, this is based from HP's information.

You can try doing a power cyle on your printer unplug the power of your printer then press and hold down the power button for more that 10 seconds maybe hold it down for 12 seconds then let go of the power button then plug the printer back in again and turn it back ON to see if the error will still show up.

If still the issue is the same, from behind the printer you will see the back part where you can see the back door there should be release buttons on both side press it both at the same time to release the back panel then pull it out this should give you a view of the rollers in your printer check to see any debris that may be causing the printer not to feed paper.

Also check the rear door that we remove it also has rollers on it check to see if there are any pieces of paper or anything that could cause the printer from not feeding, the rollers on your printer play a big part with the printing, and having only one of those rollers not spinning can cause the printer not to feed paper, also may cause an erro regarding the photo tray, which I think what HP meant when they said that thier printer sometimes gives out an error that is not really the issue.

I hope that this additional info will be of help.

my apologies if it does not.

Hi,

According to your problem first reset the tray, check the proper attachment. Check the cartridges, if any one of the cartridges is empty. Clean the cartridge head & align them. Use dry & good quality paper for photo print. Reset printer settings; change it as image printing and best quality. You can try to reinstall driver with photo printing utility that can find out your photo tray. Check properly the wireless connection. First try with normal document print. To be confirming about your printer status attach the printer to a PC through USB and check with normal printing. If there is any problem with paper tray, then you may have to replace it.

Replace ink cartridge on MP640R printer

For the Canon MP640R, make sure that the unit is plugged in and turned on. Then pull out the paper output tray and clear off anything that is on the top of the scanner. Make sure that the scanner cover is closed. Lift up the entire scanner unit until it stops. (Lift it from the front with both hands; one hand on each side of the paper output.) For a picture see: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp640r and search for Replace Ink Tanks. Wait for the ink cartridge carrier to move to the replacement position and stop. Now you can push in the tab at the front of the cartridge that needs to be replaced and pull it up and out of the printer. Open your new cartridge for that color (remove the film and the orange cartridge protector). Do not touch the contacts on the cartridge. Press the new cartridge straight down into the slot for that color until you hear a click. Once all of the empty cartridges are replaced, lift up the scanner until and gently lower it back into position. Make sure that your fingers will not get pinched be the scanner.

I hope this helps.

Photo Tray Problem

When nothing worked, I reexamined the trays, and there is a small plastic hook about half an inch long under the left side of the D7460 output tray. The tray below had a small hole. So I clicked the two together, and the printer started printing. Probably like many of you I had elevated the output tray as the printer spews onto the floor. Apparently it needs this connection. So much time lost....

Epson stylus r1800 problem with printing on cd/dvd

Try this :

Disconnect the printer from the computer.
Turn it off & make sure the CD/DVD tray is closed then turn it back on.

***

Here's generic instruction for you:

If you are receiving an error pertaining to the CD TRAY NOT BEING INSERTED CORRECTLY, please do the following:

Recommendations:
-Don't force the CD/DVD tray into the printer.
-Make sure your printer is powered on, and the output tray is in the upper position.
-Please ensure there is at least 3 inches of space behind the printer, or the CD tray may eject.

Included, are the correct CD/DVD loading instructions. Please follow the instructions below:

CD/DVD LOADING:
1. Ensure the printer is powered on. Remove any paper from the sheet feeder.
2. Push in the paper support extension on the printer, and close the paper support.
3. Push in the output tray extensions, but leave the tray open.
4. Lift the output tray. Place one hand on the top of the printer, and pull up on the output tray until it stops. Lay the tray down in the upper position.
5. Place the CD or DVD into the CD TRAY with the white (or printable) side facing up. Note: To print on small 8cm CDs, please place the small CD ring on the tray first, then place the CD inside the ring.
6. Slide the tray into the tray guides located in the output tray. Push in the guide until the arrow on the tray matches up to the arrow on the tray guide.
7. Press the PAPER button to load the CD/DVD into the printing position. The CD is correctly loaded when the printer's POWER button stops flashing.

General tips for CD and DVD printing:
-Burn data/video/images onto CDs or DVDs before attempting to print on them.
-Do not use thermal-printable or regular CDs or DVDs in the printer.
-Moisture or fingerprints on the printable surface of the CD may cause marks or smearing to appear after printing.
-All printable inkjet media is different. Some surfaces will absorb ink better than others. If output appears banded, faded, or streaky, print a Nozzle Check pattern to confirm that all colors of ink are printing completely. If the ink does not completely dry or smears after 24 hours curing time, you may need to use the Epson Print CD tools to adjust (lower) the print density.
-The only supported resolution for CD/DVD printing is 1440 dpi (aka "Photo")
-Borderless printing and printing on the "inner circle" (plastic around central hole) of CDs is not supported.
-Do not use the "print preview" feature provided by the Epson printer driver as it will only show the image on a blank field and does not offer a clear indicator of where the image will print.
-The Epson Print CD software works best with JPG images and may not import some TIFF images.
