Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a Sony FP-51WS500 projection TV, and am getting the blue screen before it shuts itself off. I have read a couple posts that seem like they will help, ie: turning down the tubes inside the front speaker panel. Before we start taking stuff apart, I just want to verify this should work... Thanks!

It works most of the time; I have posted the most extensively about this---these sets had bad picture tubes and lowering the blue screen control if it works may only buy you some time.

    TRUE; model should be kP51ws500:

remove front grill (screws on back on either side)

tilt it to the left as front control panel and wires are attached to it.

    remove inspection plate behind it

locate black plastic block with 6 shafts---one row is marked focus (do not touch) and other row screen and green is always middle control.

with set on blank unused video input (easier to see)

power up and if see blue and or curved lines locate and turn blue screen (in your case) down until lines and or blue color vanish---you should have a dark screen with only video 1 etc to be seen.

reverse operation and put plate and grill back etc.

I have a Sony kp-51ws500 that shuts off and blinks 8 times, I'v read that some other people have had the same thing and it was the flyback transformer. Now my tv has just a green screen with no pi

No, the set is prone among other things to issues with the three picture tubes, go to unused video input----screen should be black with only the input label displayed-----in your case with Green screen and or slight diagonal trace lines (if there) the Green screen control itself needs to be adjusted slightly down.

I can tell you if you want how to do that---requires only a screwdriver and 10 minutes.

I have a Sony kp-51ws500 I had the tubes fixed 3 years ago!! Now the blue screen flashes & shuts down the tv!! Also the red timer lite is blinking at the same time!!! I dont have the timer set!! Please...

The Blue CRT has shorted and shutting the set down. You can verify this by simply sliding the Blue CRT drive board off the neck without unplugging any of its wires, Just let it hang suspended and then try powering up the set. If the set stays on you will know the Blue CRT needs replacement.

I have a green screen and shuts down after only about a minute

This model had a lot of problems with bad picture tubes--it has a red, green and blue picture tube--only now available on a rebuild basis.

There is something you can try if you are only a little bit handy--a do it yourself thing that involves no replacement of parts---

If set comes on and screen goes bright green and shuts off--it is shutdown circuit-detects too much current is being drawn and protects set.

I am able to post instructions here for you to try something simple that may let the set work again for a period of time.

Let me know if you want the instructions and I will post them here for you.

If this information has helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Why my screen turning red after minute of use

If the screen looks like the one in the link I posted, then you might want to try fixing it with what is suggested on the site. Keep in mind that this is a band aid fix which compensates for weakening components, however it "should" buy you some time. Don't do these adjustments if this is not the same problem you are having. If the TV shuts itself down, check to see if the blinking code is the same as the one in the web site.

Hope this helps.

Blue Screen and TV shuts off

Here's a shortcut to what the blinking codes mean.
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/08/sony-tv-led-blinking-codes-what-does-it.html
Strange how some people have 5 blinks. Most with this problem have 8 blinks (like myself)

I still have the blue-flash-then-shutting-off problem.. (8 blinks meaning voltage error) but I did fix the blue lines.. The lines across the screen can be very easily fixed whether they're blue green or red. . No, I mean REALLY easy. Took me longer to get the cover off. Once the front cover is off it takes 10 seconds. This link was also posted recently in one of the posts below as a solution..
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html
(My lines didn't look like the ones in the picture mine were several evenly spaced blue arcs)

After some research I believe the flash/shutting off problem means the CRT is going. I've also read that it might be the D-board and I'm not even sure that that is... But If it is indeed the CRT then I'll let you know it's very difficult to find a replacement blue CRT as this part has been discontinued.. but I did eventually find an alternate to an alternate part (yes that's the 3rd alternate !)) online for $256. Here: http://store.tv-repair-service-salinas.com/8-733-649-35.html

If you're bold enough to attempt that then good luck and please let us know if it worked.
Or another alternative is there's a whole lot of Boxing Day sales goin' on right now.
