We have a Calypso Top Loading washer that seems to be turning on by itself. The display lights up and beeps as though the "normal" button was selected, but no one has touched it. It does this repeatedly at various times. It stopped for several months, but has started up again. It's more frequent this time. We have unplugged it as the beeping is quite annoying. Any suggestions what to do to resolve this?

SOURCE: annoying beep

Open the control panel and locate the beeper. Pull off one wire and tape over it with electrical tape. Voila! Hope this helps!

SOURCE: my kenmore elite calypso keeps beeping Fl what

FL (flood condition) also can be an indicator of a bad pump. The washer tries to drain and cannot because the pump has failed or is jammed with debris.

You can run a complete washer diagnostic procedure to see if you can isolate the fault by doing the following. I recommend you make sure the room is quiet so you can hear the pump motor running when expected, as well as the main drive that nutates and spins.

Perform a "key dance" to put the washer in the diagnostic mode by pressing the Prewash Options button, Wash Time, Prewash Options, Wash Time - each 2 times in rapid succession within 5 seconds total. The display will change to 99 and begin counting down (in seconds) as it runs the following tests. Listen for the pump motor to actually run and not just "hum", indicating a jam or burnout.

Display 99-81, Nutate & fill
Display 80-61, Nutate & recirculate
Display 60-41, Nutate, Fill & drain **
Display 40-21, Nutate, Fill & drain **
Display 20-0, Spin & drain **

You can cancel the test in progress at any time by pressing the Stop/Cancel button.

**during these phases the pump will run forwards and backwards (recirculate & drain). If you do not hear water pumping inside the washer or draining out the drain, your pump is likely bad and needs to be replaced.

The old style pump was a two-part assembly and the re-engineered part # mentioned above is a single piece that solves the impeller failure problem the original pumps were prone to have.

www.pcappliancerepair.com sells replacement pump part # 285990 for this washer and they are a reliable supplier with a good value. You can purchase a lifetime warranty on the pump from them for an extra fee.

Unfortunately there is not enough room in this text box to post the pump removal & replacement procedure but you can get your local handyman to do the work for you if you are not inclined, as I was, to drain the washer and turn it on its side to figure out how to replace the pump.

The other problem is that once you start getting a pump failure you need to look at the root cause. If the pump was ruined by draw strings or debris being sucked into the pump impeller, it is time to replace the top wash plate assembly (the plastic plate inside the washer that the clothes sit on).

There is a rubber seal on the outside edge of this plate which wears out over time and rotates upward, opening a bigger gap between the plate and the stainless steel drum which lets draw strings and other things get sucked all the way down into the pump. The upper wash plate & seal is a single unit and the seal itself cannot be replaced as it is molded into the plastic piece. Order this from Sears to insure a more recent 'cure date' on the rubber seal from the manufacturer, rather than 3rd party suppliers who might stock the part for longer periods and have old rubber seals past their cure date. The wash plate should be replaced about every other year.

SOURCE: Washer started to run, then

"F02" is a Long Drain error. If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes this error code will be displayed. In addition, a "SUDS" error may also be generated as a secondary error. This is an indication of a drain pump problem and/or clog in the drain line. You will need to check the following:

1. Check the drain hose to make sure it is not kinked or clogged.
2. Check the electrical connections to the pump and ensure the pump is running.
3. Remove the drain pump filter and check for foreign objects and/or debris.

To check the drain pump, click on the following link for step-by-step instructions.

If the above procedures do not correct the problem, it is recommended by the manufacturer to replace the drain pump

Control board malfunctioning.

You can try tripping the breaker a half dozen times or so, or else leave it unplugged/without power for a couple days. Once it is plugged back in you may have to leave it overnight and then try it, but that almost always revives it. I notice the problem when I don't use the washer/dryer once a week or don't push any buttons during that time to activate it in some way. Problem seems to occur more frequently in the winter when house is cooler.

Calypso beeping

The washer has a stuck keypad on the console. One of the buttons are stuck and the washer thinks you are holding that button in so it is beeping and will not allowing you to select anything else. It is hard to tell which button it is, although narrowing it down does not help anyway. The console with keypad is sold as one piece and would include the whole console facia and all the buttons. The model number provided is missing 2 digits on the end (ex. GVW9959KL1) and color is also needed for part number but they all seem to retail for $181 or close.

I just ran into a similar problem. Ours was stuck on Normal with 42 min. Started beeping every couple minutes last night after bad rain storm. Couldn't get it to stop. it would turn off if I hit stop and a couple minutes kater (like 2min) it would come on by itself. Left it unplugged overnight until about 6:00pm. Plugged it back in and it wnt right back to the normal mode after about 2min. HOWEVER, I keft it sit with the lid open and it beeped every couple minutes for a while then suddenly stopped. I checjked it and it is off, hasn't come back on. I haven't tried to run a load through it yet, so I don't know if it is fixed or not..

Washer turns on by itself. (Once in the middle of the night)

i have the whirlpool top loader also. Was not quiet a year old, starts running at random by itself. They sent the repair man out got lectured that it was my fault (too much soap, washer is in basement, I need to call an electrician to check the wiring). Now it drips water into the inside of the washer.
I can see it will eventually be cheaper to replace than call the repairman back.... Won't be a Whirlpool
