What is the definition of the y intercept?

The equation of any straight line, called a linear equation, can be written as: y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept. The y-intercept of this line is the value of y at the point where the line crosses the y axis.

Write an equation in standard form for vertex(6,1) passing through the point (4,5)

Assuming the 'standard form' is "slope-intercept", calculate the slope from the equation m = y2-y1 = 5 - 1 = 4 = -2
x2-x1 4 - 6 -2
The intercept can be found by substituting either of the two points into the equation y = mx + b
5 = (-2)4 + b
5 = (-8) + b
13 = b
(OR, using the other point, y = mx + b
1 = (-2)6 + b
1 = (-12) + b
13 = b )
Then expressing in general:
y = (-2) x + 13

Slope and y intercept

Simplify and put it into slope-intercept form:
y=9x-15

From the above the slope is readily seen to be 9 and the y-intercept is -15.

Find the linear equation in slope-intercept form

The equation of a straight line can be cast into several forms: functional form, general form, symmetrical form. The functional form is the one usually known as slope intercept form.
In the functional form, y=ax+b or sometimes y=mx+b, the factor of the x-variable (a or m as the case may be) is the slope of the straight line, and the value b, is the ordinate (y-value) of the point where the straight line cuts (intercepts) the y-axis.
Since you say nothing about the particulars of the line that interests you, there is not much more that anybody can help you with.

How do I use this calculator to find the x and y intercepts when the problem has both the x and y letters. it will not allow me to enter the full equation. example problem is 2x-5y=20 and I need to find...

x-intercept (or zero of the function)
Set y=0 in the equation and solve fo x: 2x-5(0)=20 and x=20/2=10

y-intercept (initial value)
Set x= 0 in the equation and solve for y: 2(0)-5y=20 and y=20/(-5)=-4

If the equation is in the slope-intercept form y=ax+b
1. y-intercept is b
2. To get the x-intercept ( zero of the function) Set y=0=ax+b, and x=-b/a

I knowi can find a linear equation if i have: two points {for example A(0,0) and B(1,1) the equation is y=x} or one point {for example C(0,2)} and a slope {for example m=2) the equaton is y=2x+2 can my...

The general answer is no. However the calculator can be used to find the slope and the y-intercept. You write the formula for the rate of change (a) and use the calculator to calculate it. Then you use the formula to find the y-intercept.
If you have 2 points, you can use the 2 -var statistics program to find a linear regression.
