SOURCE: Kenmore Elite 106-74202402 Freezes food ice solid in the fridge

Hi

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for.

Please do rate the solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Your refrigerator has a defrost drain blockage behind the evaporator in your your freezer compartment. Some models like yours have leak in the turns as the water leaves the freezer. I recommend that you unplug and remove the cover to the evaporator and check the defrost condensate tray below the evaporator. A wet vacuum cleaner and poring a solution with clorox in the drain will help you clean locate the leak and where the blockage may be downline.. I do have the manual on yours and can help you solve this. Some times this is a factory defect and I can help you solve the freezing drain problem. Let me know, Sea Breeze

Hello Rick,

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Good luck

I hope this helps

I have top freezer refrigerator that is not getting cold in the refrigerator area. The freezer is cold but the refrigerator is not getting very cold. The model # FRT17G4BW7.

There is a damper between the 2 sections that opens and closes based on the temp of the fridge.
One of the following could be the problem...
** Thermostat defective.
** Damper solenoid defective.
** Damper door frozen shut.

Water in bottom of refrigerator under vegetable bins.

there should be a tray that guides water from freezer to a drain located in the fridge section normally held with one screw . take it off and unclog drain ( use a vacuum to **** out sludge) clean tray/guide and mount back on. make sure all moisture is cleaned out after drain is cleared.

Temperature is not cold enough?

Model #106.8678213, The complaint was the refrigerator section was getting warm while the freezer seemed OK. The unit had been unplugged for a couple days and when I turned the unit back on, the cooling system worked fine, but I did notice a lot of water in the condensate tray which lead me to a possible defrost problem. Removed the access panel to the defrost timer and found the timer motor was not running. So basically what happened was the unit stopped defrosting and eventually built up enough frost and ice on the evaporator to block the airflow to the refrigerator section. Once the power was removed, the unit defrosted by itself and left the water in the tray. I replaced the defrost timer so now it will defrost every 8 hours like it was designed to. Now get back with me and see if the model number located on bottom kick plate it should be a number that Sears only uses. They use model numbers like this on everything and every brand. looks again like this sample ( 106.8678213 ) hope this helps, Sea Breeze

Freezer not working in garage top mount freezer on refrigerator

Sears is technically correct. It wouldn't work with the old coolant either. The principle is simple. The refrigerator is the same temp as your garage - it is not running. It must be in a 60 degree room to work properly. The sensor to turn it on is in the fresh food compartment, and it never calls for cooling; therefore it appears you freezer only is out - but they both work together. Hope this helps!

Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator, freezer doesn't work, refrigerator works

Unless specifically made for use in a garage most units won't work properly. The owners manual should say what the temp range for proper operation is (usually 55F is the low range). This is because the refrigerator section doesn't need to be "cooling" to maintain 37F if the temps on the outside are below 55F. These things are made to work in a 70F room and will not work properly if under 55F. Stupid thing thinks it's cold enough so it will never turn on, the refer section will stay cold/cool due to outside temps but since the compressor never runs the freezer will just be the same temp as the refer section (at best). Sorry, but in order for a freezer or refrigerator to work in an unheated space it must have the temp control device controling the freezer section NOT the fresh food section. In other words, that model will not work in a garage unless the temps are above 55F always.
