Question about GE Monogram Side by Side Refrigerator

Ice Maker works periodically GE Monogram Side By Side.\r\nIt will work for 5 days and then be off for several days when no ice is made. When not working Ice can be made on a lower shelf. When not working theFreezer Temp is always higher than when working. Tech thinks it is possible the evaporater fan, control board and thermister but is not sure. Need opinion before ordering parts.

No, a blockage is not the problem. I apologize that I did not say that the tray fills with water each time. It just doesn't freeze during the extended periods I'm talking about.

  • btimmins1 May 19, 2011

I don't think you received my additional comment. When the icemaker is not working, the temp in the freezer is always between 0 & 5. When it works it is always -2. In addition, when not working there is still water in the ice making tray ready to make ice if it were cold enough. It's just not cold enough in the area of the ice maker. Ice cream will melt on the top shelf of the freezer during the time the freezer is not making ice but is perfectly OK on lower shelves in the freezer. I can make ice in the lower shelves by putting water in bowl's just not in the ice maker.

I don't there are any blockages.

I just sent you a new comment. Please tell me that you received it.

  • btimmins1 May 19, 2011

My Comments Are not getting through correctly so I'm sending another comment.

The freezer will not make ice for extended periods because it's not cold enough in that part of the freezer during these times. There is water in the ice tray ready for ice to be made but none will be made during these periods. When making ice the freezer will read -2 ( the set point I use) but when not working properly the temp is like 0 to 5 degrees. During the periods when no ice is being made I can make ice on a lower shelf by putting water in a pan and putting the pan on a lower shelf.
There are no blockages in the refrigerator in my opinion.
After several days the freezer slowly will go back to -2 and the ice making cycle will begin again. The ice maker works for several days ( temp-2) then will stop and no ice will be made because the temp in the freezer has risen to the 0-5 range. Each period lasts for 4-5 days.

The unit has been in place for 2 years.

So if I replace the suggested parts, that will fix the problem? Just would like a "yes it will" answer. I don't want to replace a bunch of parts and not solve the problem. Qualified Tech will do the work.

First of all if the unit was moved recently then the problem is not the evaporater fan, control board and thermister but the gas just needs to be settled. But if it was not moved recently then the components listed could be the problem. But you should know that once these three components are replaced the unit is as good as new because these components are what makes up the unit.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

Hi btimmins1,

Have you tried clearing the drain tube?

Your refrigerator has a drain that leads to the exterior drain pan beneath the refrigerator. Occasionally this drain can become clogged resulting in standing water inside your refrigerator. A similar drain exists in the freezer, which when clogged results in ice build up on the floor of the freezer.

The drain is located either on the floor of the refrigerator, beneath the vegetable crisper, or in the wall behind a drain funnel.

Clear the drain by forcing a solution of water and bleach or water and baking soda into it with a basting syringe. If the solution will not flow through, slide a length of 1/4 inch or smaller flexible tubing into the drain tube to push the clog through to the drain pan. Remove the tubing after clearing the clog.

You may also check your Water valve for any loose or bad connections. On some refrigerator style ice makers you can easily check the valve using the hole in the front of the module.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi

Sounds like you have some crud in the line somewhere. Shut the water off, remove the filter element, and blow air in the water dispenser. If that doesn't do it, remove the line after the shut off, and blow air in before the filter. Also there could be a problem with the valve. The water passing where the line taps off will create suction. It could pull water out of the line if air can leak in the valve. It would vary with how much water is drawn on down the line. Try replacing the washer or cartridge in the valve.

The way to test the water valve is to set a volt/ohm meter to the proper scale and insert the meter leads into the water valve connector plug and see if you have 120vac when the dispenser cradle is depressed (don't disconnect the valve). Make sure the meter lead ends are touching the terminals inside the plug, and you might tape them to hold them there during your test. If you have voltage but no water, you either have a frozen line or water filter somewhere that isn't allowing the water to pass through or you have a bad valve. If you have no voltage, you have an electrical problem elsewhere, such as cradle switch, Molex plug at top or bottom FZ door hinge, etc. You can disconnect the plastic lines from the valve by exerting inward force on the tubing, pushing in on the collar around the tubing and pulling out on the tubing. It should come out easily, and make sure to trim (not too much) the end before you push the tubing back into the valve for a good seal. After the tubing is removed, place a bucket under the outlet of the valve and depress the cradle. If water comes through, you have a frozen line somewhere. If it doesn't, you have a bad valve. Because this is an intermittent problem, you will probably have to "catch" it when it isn't working.

Could be several problems (I'm a homeowner, not an expert). GE had a problem with the water line in the freezer door: not enuf insulation so the line freezes, hence no water flow. I would look at this first, especially if you press the water dispenser handle and you hear the pump, but no water comes out. Ditto if the ice bin is empty or the ice maker isn't making any more ice. If the icemaker is making ice but not dispensing it, then the auger (thing that agitates the ice cubes in the bin) may be broken or frozen. (if frozen be sure ice cubes in bin are loose and not frozen into one big ice cube).

GE Monogram refrigerator icemaker problem

This is normal if you have previously used the crushed ice mode. The refrigerator will continue to dispense crushed ice for some time until the reserves are depleted. If this continues for a longer period then shut down the refrigerator and remove the dispenser compartment, clean any remaining ice and reinstall it. Start the power supply and wait 5 hours for the ice to form. Use the cube mode and you will surely obtain ice cubes.

Intermittent rattling noise in refrigerator

Do you have an ice maker? That noise could be the ice maker trying unsuccessfully to dump ice, usually caused by a defective heater to loosen the ice cubes prior to dumping them into the container.

Possibly even if your ice maker appears to be functioning normally, it may be attempting to dump ice several times before the ice is actually ejected and if you don't use a lot of ice, you'd never notice it.

Hope this helps.
