Not being an electrician, I'm a little unsure of the metering suggestion and bypassing the relay. I did find out that when I let it cool down, and then plugged it in again, the compressor hummed for about 15 secs and then there is a click and small spark from the area of the relay, and it shut off. If I leave it plugged in, the compressor gets quite warm again. The relay is easily removed and I have determined that I can get a new one for about $20 plus shipping/duty etc. I'm wondering whether I should just replace the relay on spec.

But is the compressor starting to run, when you power on the refrigerator. If compressor is not running, then it can be faulty compressor relay or faulty compressor. In some cases, its seen that weak compressor stops running when it gets got.Check power at the compressor and relay with meter.By pass the relay by directly connecting compressor to the mains. The actual connection is as follows. The wire from power cord wire goes to compressor relay, then from relay the wire goes to compressor. So instead of that you remove the relay and directly connect wire from compressor to the power cord wire, then start the refrigerator and see.If it runs, that means relay is short and needs to be replaced. But if relay is by passed and still compressor is not running then its faulty compressor and it has to be replaced.Replacing compressor is not easy task.It has to be checked by power pressure tool after its fitted. This test is done to check refrigerant pressure in the compressor. If refrigerant pressure is not exact then with new compressor also your unit will not cool.So it has to be done by proper compressor/ac repair tech, they have this testing tools.---

You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Yes that is also good decision.Once the relay is new, so you will be confirmed that relay is not the issue.if still the problem continues then its compressor issue.--------- this will help you confirm. You can carry on.Thanks.Helpmech.

Should my refigerator compressor be hot to the touch?

Hello friend, thanks for the post!

Based off the information you have provided your compressor can be hot to the touch because it is working to help cool down your refrigerator. I would allow it the opportunity to maintain proper temperature inside of your appliance before it stops running. I hope this is helpful. -Matt

Switches off after 5 mins

Thermostat click? A leaky pressure switch will cause this.

Stuck fan, causes compressor to get hot and stop.

Dirty coils, ditto.

Blocked outside vents, ditto.

Weak run capacitor, will cause compressor to run hot and stop.

Low voltage from bad breaker, house wiring, outlet, cord or internal switch, will make compressor run hot.

Low on gas, the circulating gas keeps the compressor cool and will overheat quickly if it's too low.

Have a professional check, pretty much in that order even.

I have a ge GSH25JFXB WW side by side frig that was hit by a power surge. now, it does not cool like it use to. both the freezer and frig and warmer than before even when you turn it on full blast. they...

Start by checking the compressor. If it is running, you should tell by it being warm and a slight vibration/hum....it will start and should run until thermostat stops it. Since it's not cooling, it should be running all the time. There are 2 copper or stainless tubes entering the compressor. One should be hot;the other cold. If both are same temp,or the compressor not running,or is hot to the touch, your compressor is done for(some have a removable connector with contacts that are replaceable) Compressors aren't cheap.

Old 2nd frig stopped working, no cooling, no compressor running, only light in compartment. Any breakers or things to check?

Of course check breakers, then unplug unit from wall for several hours (let unit compressor cool) then plug back in. If after plugging it in you continue to hear a "clicking" sound on rear of unit either start device on compressor is bad or compressor its self is gone.

Frig keeps overloading circuit breaker, just repaced relay

I think the compressor has a problem with its internal running coil , or it's grounded. To check it you can disconect the power to the compressor and then turn on the breaker , and if doesn't tripped the breaker ,you know the compressor is bad.

Runs constantly. Coils extremely hot. Breaker kicks out infusebox

It sounds as if the compressor is overheating causing a large current draw throwing your breaker. If the coils are durty on the back....clean them..also clean the coils under the frig by the fan motor.

Noisy

Check to make sure the fan is not hitting anything, if the fan looks good then on the back oof the unit is a relay, check that and make sure all is well. If both check out ok then I would get to work on the compressor and make sure it is not HOT to the touch and that it is operating correctly.
