I would like to know how to put it on a sports setting and how I can change the shutter speed so that there isn't as big of a delay from when I push the button to take the picture to when it is actually taken.

There are a range of various image type settings available via the menu but, in the specifications I found on line at CNN there was no Sports Setting. The time lag between pressing the button and the shutter opening is a common problem. You may be able to improve it by pressing the button half way down, allowing the cameras computer to work out the image, for a few seconds then continue to press it right down.

Thanks! It stinks that it doesn't have a sports type setting...there are images you need to capture before the moment is gone and this lag doesn't let you do that...really starting to dislike this camera more and more everyday!

Don't give up! Read your instruction manual and/or get on line and Google your camera. You have spent money you can't get back so try to make the most of it. Find out what the camera WILL do and how it can meet at least some of your needs. You may be pleasantly surprised eben tho you may have to compromise.

What setting is for sports

That depends on the sport, the location, and what you want the pictures to say to the viewer. You won't necessarily shoot a daytime football game outdoors the same way as a basketball game indoors.

In general you're going to want a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. To get the fastest shutter speed possible, use the Aperture Priority mode by turning the mode dial to "A" then select the largest aperture by using cursor-up/down to get the smallest f/number.

Having said that, sometimes you might want a slower shutter speed to convey a sense of motion. Select Shutter Priority by turning the mode dial to "S" and use cursor-up/down to select the desired shutter speed.

Nikon D3100 shutter "problem"?

Are your pictures properly exposed and are they sharp or are your pictures degraded? Is that 1/3-second you describe a delay between the time you push the shutter release and the time the picture is taken or somthing else? Check to make sure you're in the proper shutter release mode (slider switch to right of the mode dial). Also, your self-timer may be turned on. Your camera allows you to set a 2 or 10 second delay from the menus. If it is set to 2 seconds and turned on, it might seem like a 1/3-second delay. If that doesn't help, you camera is covered by Nikon's warranty. Contact Nikon Service at 1-800-NIKON-US (1-800-645-6687) 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday.

I have a Nikon d200 and need to take sports photos in a basketball court The sport is very fast moving. What should I set the camera to. Lately the photos are dark and or blurry

You want the fastest shutter speed you can get and the largest aperture possible.
If you're close enough and it's allowed, use the flash. The flash will freeze the action. However, it's likely to give you a dark background instead of a blurry background.
If not, use the Aperture Priority mode. Open the lens to its maximum aperture (smallest f/number). This will give you the fastest shutter speed for the existing lighting conditions. The fast shutter speed will freeze the action and the large aperture will blur the background, though the amount of freezing may be limited if the lighting is relatively dark, as in a high school gym.
Be aware that if you're shooting indoors you're going up against the laws of physics. The human eye can adapt much better than any camera. A high school gym will appear light enough once you've been inside for a few minutes, but it is much, much darker than a bright day outdoors.

How do I change the shutter speed?

You can't change the shutter speed on a point-and-shoot camera. You can change modes and some settings that will force the camera to fire the shutter at faster speeds. For example, if your camera has a "sports" mode, that will fire faster. You can set the ISO to a higher setting to cause the shutter to fire faster.

I don't know how to change the iso setting for a sports action photo. Please describe in detail. I have no manual.

For sports action, if you want to freeze the action with minimal blur, set the ISO to a higher number such as 400, or 800. A faster "film speed" will allow the camera to have a quicker shutter speed. If you want to blur the subject to denote motion, pick a slower ISO number and you'll be able to take sports photos with a bit of blur in them for effect! If you need help actually setting the ISO for your camera, please let us know what is the make and model of your camera and we'll fix ya up! K

D300 long shutter delay

are you using mirror lock-up or live-view feature?

EOS 30D is slow to fire.

Are you sure you aren't in the delay setting in drive mode? This camera has 2 delay settings, one for 2 seconds between when you press the shutter and when it takes the photo, and one with 10 seconds delay - often used when you want to be in the photo (e.g. self-portrait or group photo).

If you aren't in the delay mode, then I need to know more about your settings. What shooting mode are you using? What type of photo are you trying to take (portrait, landscape, sports)? Are you shooting indoors, outdoors, bright sunlight, overcast, etc.?

Slow shutter speed

from the manual: Using Shutter-Priority Mode 1. Set the mode dial to S (shutter-priority) and a yellow arrowhead on the screen points to the current shutter speed. Press the jog dial and the current shutter speed turns yellow. 2. With the current shutter speed displayed in yellow, rotate the jog dial to select the speed you want to use. 3. Take the picture. If a workable aperture isn?t available for the shutter speed you?ve selected, the shutter speed indicator on the screen flashes when you press the shutter button halfway down. You can use the setting as is, or press the jog dial down to select the shutter speed again and rotate it to select a new shutter speed.
