Yes. There should be a label on the motor indicating how to wire it for either voltage, something like the one shown here (which is also reversible - if yours is reversible, be sure you get the correct direction if you are going to change the wiring.) http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=681437 The label is sometimes under the cover where you connect the wires. If not, you should be able to find a wiring diagram for it on-line once you determine the model number of the motor. Good luck, Al K

Wire 230 volt air compressor wiring diagrams

On 230 volts you have 3 wires 2 are 115 volt and the third wire is ground. As long as you hook the ground wires together correctly the other wires don't matter. Usually the ground wire is either white or green. The black wires are hot (115 volts).

I have a marathon 3hp motor wired for 220 on a campbell hausfield air compressor. It has a white, black, and green wire coming out of the motor. I am using a no. 12 wire with ground. how do i wire it up to...

Hi! sims146
The Green wire from the electric motor is ground. Check the compressor motor, make sure it is wired for 220-230 Volts. If it has a white wire it could be wired 120 Volts. There should be voltage and current ratings on the motor plate. I always double check these connections. At 230 Volts this motor should be 17 Amps full Load. A 25-30 amp fuses are required to protect this motor circuit. Otherwise up to a 42.5 Amp Inverse Time Delay Breaker could be used.
The welder circuit should have 230 Volts between the Red and Black wires. The white wire is Nutral / Ground. Hopefully this is a 30 to 40 Amp circuit. The Four prong air compressor outlet, White is Neutral, Black and Red 230 Volts, Gray should be ground. Please check with Voltmeter, as some times people swap colors.

I want to convert my compressor from 115 V to 220volt? There is nothing in the owners manual on how to do this. Can you help me?

Your garage mate unit was made to operate on 120 volts. That one reason there is nothing in the owners manual. To convert it my be costly.First your electric motor must be able to handle 220 volts. you will need to look on the motor tag and see if it has 120v/230v. if not you will have to purchase a new motor that will handle 220/230 volts. If your motor will handle 220/230/volts you need to look at the the wiring diagram attached to the motor. you then will need to purchase a 220 v plug and outlet and correct wire size to install.

The compressor is 3HP 230 v motor. In the pressure switch it is wired white and black from motor and green to ground. Is the white and black wire 115 volt each or it the white wire common and black wire...

If the motor is 230 v then it should have three wires, black, red, and green, however if the motor is convertible from 120 to 230v then the wire from the motor may be black, white, and green. Check the motors label to see if it has different wiring configurations. If the motor is 230 v only then the white wire would be the other side of the 230 v circuit, and the pressure switch should break both sides. Neutral is not used. Note that some people would use a single pole pressure switch, although this will work it is not recommended.

yes your ok if they say the unit doesn't need to be changed in the incomimg power from 208 up to 230 volts or vice-versa,normally they classify motors as120/208/ 230 /460 volts, instead of 120/240/480 volts, but all line voltage varies in this voltage range between 230 to 255 volts a.c. with a +10/-10 percent tolerance either way,and as long as the instructions dont say anything about changing motor connections your good to go, just look on the motor body if possible and make sure theres no wiring diagrams to change voltage, but i would say no in a package A/C like that, and as far as the current goes your good with the 20 amp tandem pole breaker, let me know if i can further assist you. thanks

The wiring diagram to change the voltage is on the name plate on the motor. The motor leads are numbered. Go by the diagram and reconnect the numbered leads the way it says for 'low voltage'
