I have a netgear prosage fs116e 16 port switch. It is connected to a data jack and goes to one port on a switch. I have 8 computers setup on it using all the same VLAN but copying or downloading anything to a workstation on the switch from the network is extremely slow.

This is only a 10/100 switch so it is not exactly fast. you should plug a laptop directly into the router and perform a speed test then perform the same test from the switch. www.speedtest.net is a useful site for this, if there is a lot of difference. then try a new cable. if the fault persists purchase a gigabite switch

Netgear rp614v4 as a switch

This router acts like a switch automatically, you can converse between ports on the same LAN connections without any setup.

They all need to have the same network setup, the same gateway address and DHCP setup.

If you are not accessing the internet that's all you need.

See manual http://downloads.netgear.com/pub/netgear/files/RP614v4_RM_12Jun08.pdf

How to connect netgear fs108 to cable modem

leeb..... switches cannot be connected to the Cable modem.... because NAT will not be enabled in cable modem....so there wont be any DHCP server present in the cable modem....
Nat will be enabled only in DSL modem like AT&T verizon etc....So DHCP server will be present inside DSL modem...that is the reason why switches can be connected only to the DSL modem....
With NAT enabled modem, switch will work as a switch.... With NAT disabled modem, switch will work as a hub.... This is the difference....
Any doubts further ? please clarify with me.... I am ready to help you....

How to link with 16 port switch with 8 port switch

Good question.
To link the new switch, take a short cable from the LAN port on the new Switch and connect it to one of the existing ports on the old or connected switch. it's just a daisychain.
Just keep in mind that the LAN connection on the Last switch must be connected to a PORT on the prior device on the LAN.

I dont how to connect my pc's using D-Link

Dear! first of all you need a 4 port hub or 8 port switch that have easily available. Now, first of all, put three wires (Straight Through Cable) in three different ports and other side its ends put in that nodes or computers. Now they are connected to each other. You want to sharing data for each you should run setup wizard for sharing inside the network places after that computer required a restart. Now the computer will start and data will share to each oher. You should use IP address for computers, first of all IP 192.168.0.1 for first PC and 192.168.0.5 for second PC and 192.168.0.10 IP for 3rd PC. Enjoy, everything is accessible now ...........
Thank You

NetGear ProSafe FS116P 16 Port... Problem:

I had the same issue with the 8 port prosafe GS108.
open the case, look for the small (barel like shape) capacitors near the power connector.
Their top is mostly silver and should be FLAT, if it is uneven or slightly expanded as if ready to explode, that is the one that need replacement.
Best source is any old motherboard or if you prefer, buy a couple new ones.
6.3 Volt, 1000mF (micro Farad)

If you cannot determin which one is gone, just replace both or how many your switch has.

Open Port 81 on Netgear Switch

Actually you need to open the port on the cable modem / router. Switches just pass the packets along.
