Cutting of bottom of letters

Really, you have a typewriter?

You stop typing before you reach the end. If it is the electronic type with a display, you need to set the paper size to the size of paper you are using.

If you are using a computer and word processing program, again, set the paper size.

How do I remove the cover?

You need to open the clear plastic cover, then look in the inside of the machine and there is a clip on each side. You will have to pull twords the center of the machine to release the catch AND pull up on the outer cover. Then run your finger nail or small flat blade screwdriver between the top and bottom covers at the front of the unit (below the space bar). Lift from the front and it should come off. The inside latches can be hard to pull so may take several attempts to get it open.

Smith Corona XD6600 wont advance paper. No debris in the way, platen switch is in correct position.

You may have bad feed rollers, or they may not be engaging the platen as they should for one reason or another. A common cause for this is if the paper tray is not installed correctly. If you can remove the platen, check that the guide fingers on the paper pan are situated on the rests made for them. Also make sure the platen is snapped in place all the way if this is the snap in kind. Hope this helps.

The key I push is not the letter that prints

Many factors affect correct character selection. To isolate the problem, follow the directions below:

  1. Is the daisy wheel locked into the carriage correctly?
    1. Open the top, locate the black lever near the hammer and move it away from the platen.

  1. Lift out the daisy wheel. Inspect the petals to see if they may be damaged.

  1. Locate the small spring loaded pin near the center of the daisy wheel hub. If the pin is missing or sticking, or the daisy wheel has damaged petals, replace the daisy wheel.

    1. Look into the opening from where you removed the daisy wheel. Ensure that there is no debris in the area; use canned air to blow out the area.
  1. Reinstall the daisy wheel or install a new one if the old one is damaged.

  1. Remember to push the black lever towards the platen until it snaps into place.

  1. Close the top cover and turn on the typewriter.
    1. After the carriage moves to the left margin, insert paper, and open the top cover.
    2. Push the hammer forward until it presses the daisy wheel petal onto the paper.
    3. It will leave an impression on the paper; it should be a lower case "h".
    4. If the impression is any other letter than those above, the typewriter may require service.
  2. Examine the keyboard area. If there is any contamination, i.e. spills, pet hair, etc, the keyboard may need to be cleaned by a trained technician.
  3. If the problem is not resolved after these actions, the typewriter may require service.

I can't get the paper to feed. I have to push the paper so hard to get it to go in, only while rolling the wheel. This is a typer that I was not using because of this problem.

There is probably a label or other debris on the paper tray. Open the cover, on the L. end of the platen you will find a latch, press it down, lift the platen up and slide it to the left, now you will be able to remove debris.

I have a brother electric typewriter and the print on the paper is no longer sharpin appearence.I changed ribbon to no effect. Now what?

MAKE SURE RIBBON IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY, SHOULD BE BETWEEN "FINGERS" NEXT TO CARDHOLDER AND CARDHOLDER.
COULD BE A BAD BATCH OF RIBBONS
SOMETIMES CORRECTABLE RIBBON DOESN'T PRINT WELL ON CERTAIN TYPES OF PAPER, SUCH AS "NCR" PAPER, TEXTURED, SLICK OR ANY PAPER THAT HAS BEEN THROUGH A PRINTING PROCESS (FORMS, LETTERHEADS, ETC.)
CHECK RIBBON ITSELF. THE CARBON SHOULD BE A FAIRLY EVEN LAYER. IF THERE ARE BLANK PLACES----

Check to be sure that the correction tape is in properly and tight. Then make sure that the ribbon (and correction tape) are between the two metal "fingers" and the cardholder (which is the metal thing that holds the paper close to the platen right in front of the ribbon) Is the ribbon moving? You should be able to hold the ribbon up and see each letter on the ribbon. Also make sure the printhammer is locked forward. You should not be able to just reach in and take the printwheel out without the ribbon in place. The only other thing I can think of, is the ribbon got twisted some how. The dull side should be towards the paper.

Typewriter troubles

First, the paper problem is most likely that your paper release lever is in the forward position, just click it back and you will find that the paper will stay in place and space upwards when carriage return is pressed. Make sure that the printing unit can move freely to both extremes of its travel when the machine is turned off. Lift the top cover up and move the print unit by hand, it will feel stiff but it will move. If all this is in place your problems are over....
