-With the western digital drive plugged in you will want to open the "Disk Utility" application,

-Disk Utility can be found by either opening you applications folder, then opening the Utilities folder
or
-Use spotlight (the magnifying glass in the upper right corner) and type in "disk", it should show Disk Utility as the first choice

-Once disk utility is open on the left hand side you should see a list of drives including your internal hard drive and optical disk drive, below them should be your western digital drive with an orange icon next to it.

-Select the western digital drive in this menu so that it is highlighted, then back in the main window near the upper middle you will see 4 buttons named "First Aid, Erase, Partition, Raid & Restore" Select the Erase Option

-Now you will see a menu with drop down arrows for what type of a partition you want it to have

-If you want to use it on windows and mac then select MS-Dos(FAT), otherwise if you just want to use it on a mac, select Mac OSX Extended,

-Finally hit the "Erase" button near the bottom right and after it is done you should see the icon for this drive appear on your desktop as a useable disk

You shouldn't need to do anything to make the drive work on your mac apart from plug it in!

I have a mac Book Pro and have been backing up my photos to a WD Passport external hard drive for several months now. This morning the Passport did not even show up in the finder window. Its' Smartware...

Try plugging into another computer and if that works save all your data then format and try back on your own computer. If this doesnt work start to look into data recovery software. I use 1 called GDB (Get Data Back) which will read a lot of drives information when operating systems wont. Good luck from Scott

Cant format my Hard drive to work with mac and pc

Unfortunately when you format a hard drive it deletes anything on it so if you did this after putting the documents onto it they are now gone.

WD Passport plugged into mac then PC, but no drive letter

Hi

You can either format the drive using the PC or install MacDisk on your PC witch will allow you to view any Mac formatted drive on the PC.

http://siteadvisor.de/sites/macdisk.com/downloads/17329989/

Click the link to download macdisk7.5.7.5 or reformat the drive to NTFS which the mac and PC will be able to share if the need arises in the future.

"Not enough space for music DB. Please free up 30 MB"

The mp3 manufacturers are often being disingenuous - they plug an mp3 player into a Macintosh, and it shows up, so they say, "Hey! It's Mac-compatilbe!" But, the software is certainly not Mac-compatible, so if you ever experience a problem, there is no way to fix it. Also, the Sansa e200 series does not recognize iTunes format.

In general, I would agree that you need to reformat your player, but I have no idea how to do that on a Mac (I'm good at a lot of things, but I'm Mac-illiterate).

Mac My Passport Essential Hard Drive 320GB

This could be a formatting issue, a power issue, or, if you use a hub, it may be a latency issue as well.

Mac's, in general, do not recognize NTFS formatted hard drives. Check the drive properties to see how it is formatted. If this is the case, you can try to reformat the drive as FAT32 (using the MAC) and start over. Keep in mind that you may run into partition size limitations, depending on how current your computers are set up.

Some USB ports limit power to 400-500ma per port, the Passport Essential needs a bit more than 1000ma and won't work at all with these computers. Other USB ports/hubs limit the total power available for all devices combined... this is why, in your case, you can use one drive, but not both.

FYI, higher speed devices also tend to need shorter cables due to latency. (Light & electricity travels about 1 foot, or 30 cm, in a billionth of a second; this limits the size of high speed devices. In layman's terms, latency is the Brontosaurus effect, since the head takes a while to talk to the tail.)

To boost power, Western Digital recommends using a 22" USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (WDCA029RNN) to combine the power of two USB ports into the one Passport Essential USB port--it is also a bit longer than the original 18 inch cable. For all EXCEPT the black Passport Essential drive, you may also the WD Passport™ Power Supply Adapter (WDPS021 for the US voltage version). See Western Digital knowledge base ID 1296 for more on this issue.

Hope this helps!
