Question about John Deere Garden

1 Answer

I can start the mower with the break engaged, however when I take my foot off the break the mower quits. I have checked the seat switch by putting the two wires together and the same continues. I have the mower deck off the tractor and looked under the tractor and see no wires broken. Help Dave

The two wires on my seat switch need to be apart, not together. This is kinda a guess, as all mowers are not the same. Good Luck!

I agree it is the seat switch. This switch will let you start the mower as long as it is in neutral, the brake is set and the mower blades are not engaged. I think it is just two wires, maybe you can jump them together and see if it runs.

With my foot on the brake, I turn the key and the mower engine starts. Taking my foot off the brake, the engine stops. There is no change in mower engine speed when I step on the gas. What do I repair. ...

Check your safety switches for proper operation. For example with the brake engaged it is posible to start the mower without a rider, if the seat safety switch is bad, then when you let off the brake it does not signal a rider in the seat and will kill the engine. I would start with the seat safety switch, try disconnecting it and then start and try to mow. If you are able to then you know that is where the problem is.

I hope this helps you out.

If it really 'lugs', meaning the engine gradually chugs slower and slower as if it's struggling, then it could be a belt problem, but I'm going to guess it just quits, which suggests a problem with the seat safety switch. Look under the seat, take out the safety switch, and tape it in the pushed-in position. See if the tractor runs now. If so, the switch is the culprit - either it failed, or the mounting is wonky so it doesn't activate when you're in the seat.

When you engage the mower deck the mower will die and as long as you don't engage the mower deck it will not die.

Check the seat switch for propper connection and position. Also, check any wiring that may be attached to the mower deck. In an extreme case, the pto switch or foot pedal switch may be defective, but mostly unlikely.

Engine dies on lawnmower if foot not on brake

The problem seems to be that the mower seat switch does not "recognize" that an operator is sitting in it.
The 1000 series does not require an operator to startup. Does not require an operator for it to run with the brake on. But it requires one to drive or mow, and it isn't recognizing you so it shuts down, make sense?
The seat switch (for whatever reason) is the issue.

Now, most LT tractors in the 1000 Series use a seat switch that is located under the left front of the seat. The wires connecting to the switch are quite crude and can get snagged by a tree branch or bush and come unplugged. Check these first.

Second possibility would be the ingition switch itself. It contains a module that controls, among other things, the safety circuit. Thie would need to be diagnosed at a reputable, certified Cub Cadet Dealership. The good news is this replacement isn't terribly expensive (if it turns out to be the issue).
My gut tells me it is the seat switch . . . However, Reply with "Add Comments" option if you need further info.

Hope this helps,
Dolf-

Craftsman yard tractor runs but take foot off brake it dies.....

Check the under seat switch. The switch sometimes fails and this cuts the ignition except when the foot brake is down. You can use jumpers across the switch wires to test it.

Mower quits when engaging mower deck of husqvarna yth 2348

Try putting a jumper wire on the wire going from the engine to the seat. Take that plug and put a wire from one side to the other. Be careful not to cut your feet off when engaging deck.
