Hmm most likely you will need to get it on a patch for smoking and drinking it's more of being strong and staying away from the old grandpa juice. Kiddn aside most likely piston rings as the car gets older the ability of the piston rings to seal properly fades so there is residual oil than enters the combustion chamber and there it burns most likely you are also feeling a lack of power due to the compression reduction most likely it means depending on how bad it is a rebuild of an engine.

Plugged drainback holes

Please could you elaborate the details with respect to the mileage of the car. Have you changed the oil recently? has the car smoking or consume more oil recently? if yes to both you might need a overhauling of the engine and should be estimated. Dont forget to check if the exhaust also if clogged and so smoking.

My car is smoking blue smoke

Blue smoke out of the exhaust is indicative of either worn piston rings or valve guides. Either of which will require extensive work to fix. Oil is basically slipping past the rings or guides and into the combustion chamber, where it is being burned and expelled as blue smoke out of the exhaust.

Keep an eye on your oil consumption. A newer model BMW like yours should be consuming less than half a quart of oil every 3-5k miles. If it is consuming more than this then it needs to be diagnosed as either the piston rings or valve guides and repaired, typically by a shop for a job this big on a late model BMW.

Whenever I start the car it smokes than after warming up it stops smoking.

The key is how much smoke? Does the smoke have a smell to it. Are you consuming any fluids, like coolant, or oil?

Tons White smoke that is sweet smelling is usually coolant getting into the combustion chamber.

Less white smoke, especially if other cars are doing it, is normal. For every gallon of gas that you burn, you generate a gallon (GALLON) of water. so this water usually evaporates, but sometimes not. It has little or no smell.

If the smoke is bluish white, that is oil, but usually your converter would fill with oil, and cause error codes, or loss of power. This smell is distinct, but not necessarily sweet.... After the converter heats up, it may be able to burn off the oil and the smoke stops.

What are you consuming, fluid wise, will direct where you go next.

Loosing oil, no spots or puddles on ground, no smoke from exhaust

A very common issue with the 1.9L engine is oil consumption. You may not see alot of blue smoke out of the exaust but it is very typical for this engine to consume oil without any visible leaks.

blue smoke is from coolant. check your coolant levels because it could be the head gasket.

what about oil? is it consuming oil (if yes, its most likely is consuming coolant too)

if not consuming anyting, it will be the valve seals (located inside the engine)

Mazda mx5 smoking problem

Please provide more details for analysis like:
- what is the mileage on your car?
- is it smoking continously or only intermittently? How much smoke is it?
- what colour is the smoke? bluish or sooty?
- does it smoke when engine is cold or hot?
- is your car losing power?
- is your car consuming motor oil and at what rate?
- has the engine ever been overheated?
- is there an engine MIL ( malfunction indicator light ) code flashing on your dash? If it has, then you need to get the workshop to run a scan of the engine's computer to find out what the possible faults are.
- by the way, is your mx-5 fitted with a rotary engine or the common 4-stroke piston engine?
