Question about Boating

1 Answer

I have a boat that has a 90 hp johnson outboard on it and when the previous owner had it the oil injection went out so now you have to mix gas. i took it out yesterday and it doesn't want to idle and it doesnt like low rpms it does great in high rpms. also when you shut it off and start it you have to rev it a while before you can get it into drive wwithout it dying. he said one of the rings might be bad or something from the oil injection going out. would this be my problem like could oil/gas be getting where it shouldnt be?

Ok.Get a compression test done. That will solve the rings debate. If you premix the fuel,it has to be at 50/1.If the comp test is within 10% of each cyl,all should be ok.Hope this helps

50/1 is what i run i was wondering if i ran some seafoam in the fuel if that might help clean it out and run better since it sat for two years outside in MN without being winterized or anything.

The carby's may need a good clean and throw in a new set of spark plugs.Get the water pump done. When they have sat for that long it WILL need it.Better than cooking the motor.

Do I use reg gas or a gas mix?

Matt, If engine is two stroke and not oil injected then yes you must mix 2 stroke oil and fuel. 4 stroke engine have a crank case which is filled to proper level with 4 stroke engine oil. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

What type of petrol is needed for a yamaha outboard motor horsepower 8?

reg unleaded gas.

You haven't specified as to its year of manufacture, so if its older, as in a 2 stroke, it'll be a mix of gas and outboard oil.

If its a newer model, a 4 stroke, it'll be injected(Gas and oil seperate)

If you are totally unsure, Consult your owners manual and if you have none, then any Yamaha dealer can use the serial # off the motor to establish any specs on it for you.

Happy boating.

1985 40 hp Johnson outboard wouldnt open up and

sounds like your mix is off and it's fowling the plugs. probably too rich. make sure the level in your carb bowls isn't too high. Really sounds like you should clean and bench set your carbs. Especially if a plug change helps but doesn't last, then it's got to be your fuel mix, or maybe timing.

Is there a place under the cowling to put outboard motor oil if not mix 50 to 1 to be safe if will not hurt the motor to add oil to the gas,but if you dont you will burn up the motor. Jim OMC REtired Mech
