I have a cra7ftsman riding mower that will not crank over.the problem that I am having is the starter seems to spin backwards.I checked the entire electrical system and everything seems ok,but the starter still spins the wrong way.I have power at the power post on the starter while cranking and the starter case gets grounded from the engine block, but while cranking the starter star wheel does not come up and contact the flywheel, the starter spins the wrong way.I already tried two brand new starters and they did the same thing.the only way to get the starter to spin properly is to ground the power post and power the case of the starter, then the star wheel spins up and contacts the flywheel but then immediately gets hot and stops.what am I doing wrong? How do I fix this?PLEASE HELP ME, this is driving me crazy!!!!!

IF you have to remove the spark plug to get the engine to crank, check to see when the motor is in the compression stroke and go just past that point and try again to see if the motor cranks with the spark plug back in. 3 of 4 piston motions are not related to compression. If it does not move then the starter does not have enough torque.
make sure thers power going into the starter
if there is then see if the starter is siezed, try turning the fly gear, but not just up against the flywheel but try turning the starter backwards to see if it moves
Check battery cable for correct hook up. Red positive to starter and black to ground. If battery connected backward starter rotates in opposite direction and can burn up starter. If correct battery hook up check plastice gear on starter for wear.
Removed starter and tested with new battery and jumper cables...starter worked fine. Replaced battery and cleaned cable attachments...unit started as usual.
When starter throws this would indicate that the interconnect circuits are intact..the engine still would not turn...that leaves the battery, the cable, or a siezed engine. The engine flywheel turned easily...no siezure. That left only the battery and cable. Battery was 3 years old...cable was corroded...bad combination. Battery was replace and corrosion removed from the cable terminals...started first crank.
need more info like is the engine spinning over and not cranking, if it spinns over check for spark at the spark plug, if you have spark you now have a fuel problem, if it doesnt spin over at all its probly in the battery or starter. to find out if its a fuel problem just spray carburator cleaner in
too the carburator it dont take much, then try cranking it and see if it runs if it does more then likely the carb needs to be taken off and cleaned, agaian not that hard of a job, just get the carb off and brake it down and spray carb cleaner in every hole in the carb,,,, good luck
