Question about Hardware & Accessories

1 Answer

We installed a new ceiling light fixture in our hallway. I used the 13W CFL bulb. Just recently, I turn on the light and a hour or so later it turns off. It takes a few minutes before I can make it turn back on. Any ideas?

DON"T USE TILL YOU FIX- the connections inside fixture are getting hot and expanding- OPEN SHORT_FIRE HAZARD- that is why going out after an hour and then works after a few minutes of cooling- take down and check you connections

Can't find replacement bulbs in Toronto. They are VIVA PBCFS1370.

Tina - I just tried to find this bulb for one of my customers. Amazon had a bulb listed with a photo of the VIVA PBCFS1370 bulb. If you read the comments - someone said they sent a Levitron bulb which does not fit. I think you are stuck going back to where you bought the Hunter fan (I assume big box store) or to Hunter directly. A regular 13W GU24 bulb seems to be slightly too wide to fit in the fan. Hunter's part number is 6755101000 and they were $12 each - but that is in the USA. Isn't that a nuisance!

Can I replace the 13 watt CFL bulbs in my fan light fixture with a higher watt bulb

The bulb fixture itself should tell you what the max wattage is that you can put in there but they are normally at a 60watt limit.

The problem is that the CFL lamps, once they are lit, will stay energized by a very low level of current, and the remote obviously is not what we would call a positive off device .. if you use the wall switch and then go back to the remote in the off position , do the lights come on flickering again? You could try another brand of remote.

It is not a ceiling fan or wiring problem. It is your bulbs. Normal CFL bulbs do not work in dimmers or with remotes. Remotes work on RF signals and cause interference with the bulbs. You may also notice a buzzing sound and the lights may not go out when you turn off the switch. It is a fire hazard, can invalidate your warranty on the bulbs and will shorten their life. Try changing the bulbs to the new dimmable CFL's and see if it helps. It should eliminate your problem altogether.

New Leviton 'lighted, decorative' switch flickers when off

You cannot use standard electronic dimmer switches with CFL bulbs, only incandesant bulbs! That is why you are getting the flickering.

With CFL's bulbs installed in a light fixture that has a non-flouresant rated dimmer switch on that circuit, you will cause the standard dimmer to fail.

You have to look at the dimmer package (sometimes printed on the back of the dimmer itself too) to see if it can be used with CFL bulbs,as many are not rated for use with anything other than standard incandesant bulbs.

Hope you found this very helpful and best regards!

Lights flicker when turned off by remote

I had this same problem with a Hampton Bay fan with a remote light switch. I call the manufacturer of the of the switch and was told that the model switch I had would not work correctly with CFL bulbs. The problem is with the dimmer function. You either need to change the bulbs to incandescent, or change the remote receiver in the ceiling. Hampton Bay was kind enough to send me a new receiver that works with CFL. The CFL units are white, and the incandescent is black. Hope this helps you.
