Question about Air Tools & Compressors

1 Answer

My Devilbiss EGA-503-390F suction feed spray gun won't spray any materials with a viscosity greater than water. I purchased this gun in March 2010, and it was fine. I have cleaned, chnaged the needle packing and lubricated the gun, but the problem still exists. It is as though the suction is low from the 8 oz. cup. I have tried opening the needle to full open, and air pressures from 20 to 80 psi, and it makes no difference.

Probably neds a larger needle valve say a 1.8mm or 2mm I had the same problem. If you have too much air oressure the air will move too fast to pick up the paint and air is all you will get. 25 to 35 PSI is plenty.

And as you thought if the paint is to thick it won't pick it up, even a gravity feed won't work if the paint is too thick or you have too much aur pressure.

Just go with a larger needle valve and nozzle

The EGA-503 only comes with one set of air cap and Nozzle Size (!). And this is suitable for light and precise touch-up jobs. If you want to spray something heavier, then you would have to change the set-up, i.e. larger nozzle. But for EGA-503 only 390 (air cap) and F (nozzle) are available. Theoretically you could check for the predecessor EGA-502 which had different set-ups, incl. nozzles called "EGA-608-G" and "EGA-608-E". However, they are only limited available and you would have to change needle and air cap too. This makes the whole thing probably too costly.....

The trigger sticks on my DeVillbis quartcup spray gun. I have to push the trigger back open to stop the spray.

There is a spring inside the gun body which pushes the trigger back. Check this.

Both are gravity type spray guns, i.e. they cannot draw from a bottom (suction, siphon) cup.

No suction

This model comes in either suction feed or pressure feed. For example a 6211-4307-9 is a suction model. There are different air caps and needles depending on feed style. I assume your'e using either a 82-545 or a 82-555 suction cup attached to the gun. Make sure the tubing is tight, and that the vent hole in top of the cup isn't clogged. See Binks.com for detailed tip combinations.

Binks bbr converting from pressure to siphon

Worked in paint repair shop for 18+ years. Every time we had that issue it was the wrong air cap. The particular model we always had trouble with was a Devilbiss JGA going from a pressurized system to a 1 quart cup. But the Devilbiss and Binks are quite similar.
The air cap from the pressurized system would actually cause a reverse pressure in the cup.
Both air caps were for this gun. Also the Devilbiss
rep said they should be interchangeable.
They weren't. Try a different air cap.
I'm kind of curious so please let me know if this works for your Binks.
Good luck!
