Question about Whirlpool GB2SHDXP Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

The Refrigerator is 2 years old, and is no longer able to reach below 38 degrees in the Refrigerator or Freezer. 3 days ago noticed food in freezer was defrosted. Verified nothing was blocking vents, verified coils under freezer where clean, verified Compressor was running and cooling fan was running by removing rear inspection panel, verified air was moving thru vents in both freezer and refrigerator. Noticed Compresser running but line was cool, not real cold, and coils under freezer were not warm. Small amout of ice on freezer back wall. Unplugged fridge for 12 hours, water overflowed condensate pan, plugged back in, and after 24 hrs running will only reach 38-39 degrees. Cannot find defrost timer, assuming its integrated in circuit board located in control panel. Could you please tell me what is wrong? Thank you, Chris

    Hi heatman,
If the refrigerant is low, can this inexpensively / easlily be repaired? I did not see a tap to charge on the lineset, it looks like a sealed unit. the Frige was $1200, I do not want to pay half that again to fix it. Can you estimate the cost of the re-charge? this was my thought as well. There is no appreciable dirt on the coils, but there is a small white residue on a bend in the line near the compressor, may just by flux from a joint seal. Thank you,

I'm not certain I replied correctly the fist time, so here goes..

The potential problems you described are what I was thinking could be the cause as well. Can the low refrigerant problem be inexpensively / easily corrected? I do not see a tap in the lineset anywhere the line is visible, it looks like a factory sealed set-up? I do not want to spend more than half the cost of the $1200 fridge to repair it only to have something else go wrong a year later. I've never known anyone that had a refrigerant problem so quickly.

Can you estimate the cost of a repair for the problem you described, and the likelihood the repair will then last for 10 years?

    Thank you,

    Chris

Hi Chris,

The problem would seem to be that you developed a small leak in the refrigeration system. This is also assuming that you checked and cleaned the condenser coils which are underneath the fridge. Excessive dirt could also cause this, but from what you are describing I would say the problem is more then that and you have a leak...

The only other thing would be thermostat sensor issues, but then the compressor would be cycling and not running steady...

    Hi Chris,
A refrigeration system can leak at any given time. I have seen some last forever and others leak in weeks...go figure...
Anyway yes they are factory sealed and to get more in there a valve needs to be put on...
However the leak also will need to be found and fixed...so the repair would be permanent.

    So just thinking out loud...

Your going to have a days worth of labor...8X $75.00= $600.00
Materials...freon, valve, etc... at least another $200.00

So you will be well over half the cost of a new one to fix...

Unfortunately I would probably go shopping...hopefully your luck will change...

How to set a temperture

Hello,

By keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold, it unnecessarily wastes electricity. The recommended temperature is 37 to 40 degrees for the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. The recommended temperature for the freezer compartment is 5 degrees. If you have a separate freezer for long-term food storage, it should kept at 0 to -5 degrees.

The following steps below is how to set the temperature of your refrigerator.

The first thing you must know is that your refrigerator should be set at 37-38 degrees. Anything at 40 or higher and you are risking food born illness (food poisoning) or spoiling your food.

Step 2
Place your magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator.

Step 3
Set your dial on your refrigerator to the second lowest setting. (If your refrigerator is already equipped with a digital thermostat, simply set it for 37 or 38 degrees and do not move on to the next step)

Step 4
After 2 hours, check your thermometer reading. If your reading is 38 degrees, there is no need to go higher and you are ready to put your groceries in. Be sure not to open and close your refrigerator during these two hours or your temperature reading will be incorrect.

If your reading is higher than 38 degrees, move your dial up to the next coldest setting and repeat the steps every two hours until you reach the correct temperature for your refrigerator.

Step 5
Once you have reached the correct refrigeration temperature for your refrigerator, place the magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator permanently and watch for changes.

Typically, your refrigerator temperature will need to be adjusted with the seasons, a higher setting in the summer and a lower setting in the winter.

Hope this helpout and take care.

Top freezer quit freezing. Refrigerator works.

Good day,
Yes, the cold weather is the cause.
Your machine is cycled off and on by the thermostat located in the fresh food compartment. When the fresh food compartment is satisfied, it will shut off the entire machine.
Any temperature below 55 degrees will reduce running time until the freezer will not function, or at best poorly.
Engineers designed domestic refrigerators to balance properly between 70 and 95 degrees. It should be in your user manual.

My dometic refrigerator is not freezing properly. it is a model 1062-ndr. the ice cream will not stay hard and the temp in the freezer is 18 degrees. the refrigerator part is o.k. and temp is 38 degrees.

If the refrigerator is 38 degrees and the freezer 18 degrees , both are not normal.

Have you used any hard and pointed object to remove any frozen food or Ice before this happen?

Have you notice any oily part coming out in the freezer or at the back of the refigerator which will indicate that there was a leak?

there are few factors that may cause your refrigerator to be like that:

1. A possible leak along with the tubing that will cause to loose the refrigerant which make the refrigerator to produce ice.

2. lost Compression (Motor compressor) this happen eventually specially the refrigerator is more than 10 years old

the best way to find out is to call a technician and have them check it

How do you manually start timer on fisher paykel

We disconnected the refrigerator and took the back of the freezer apart. There we noticed ice had built up on the coils. After removing all the food, we let the freezer defrost for 3.5 hours. Then we connected it, and it started to cool down immediately. After 1 1/2 to 2 hours, the refrigerator was down below 40 degrees. All food was replaced, and now the refrigerator is working properly All of this was down to the Fisher Paykel Model E522BRM.

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.

Top mounted freezer on refrigerator not working

Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) Please don't rate this if not a Fix-Ya for you, as anything else lowers my score.

Amana AFD2535DEW freezer/refrigerator with intermittent tempurature swings

I had the same issue. It was the relay overload which essentially provides the extra boost to get the compressor going. The switch tries for about 10 seconds before giving up and then retries 3 - 4 minutes later. In the early stages of failure, eventually it will work and the compressor will kick on. But eventually the switch will fail and will just cycle through the 10 second attempt every 3 to 4 minutes. The part is about $35 - part number 67005560.

Freezer/Refrigerator tempurature swinging wildly

The compressor is overheating and not starting. Could be just the start relay. If this happens again try unplugging it for about an hour then it should work for a while. Heat between doors is normal this is an electric heater designed to keep the doors from sweating. You just noticed it because the refrigerator wasn't cold.
