Clean the optical head of the DVD drive and try a DVD. If the DVD spins but does not detect, try with a data CD, if there is no reading then the chances are that the optical head is faulty.
If the DVD reads but does not play then the signal procesing section can be faulty. You might need to change the DVD assembly if the unit is out of warranty.
