The Hard Drive must be Write protected. There might be a Toggle switch around External Drive for Write Protection. Or can you save files to any other USB Drive (Pen Drive) ?

Hi,

Use another external Hard Drive temporary.
Download GETDATABACK , install it and run as administrator.

Run the program as to :"recover deleted files".
After doung the 3 stages of scan, your files will appear intact.
Save them to another Hard Disk.

Hope you succeed - it needs patience.

My external hard drive got a virus had to reformat now computer wont recognize it

I am taking for granted that you are using Windows, not sure which version ( XP , 7, 8 , 8.1 )
and if I am correct, but your computer does not recognize the drive, make sure the usb port is one that will give power to the external drive. You should use USB2 or if available USB3. Those are powered.
Click the Search feature for the particular version of Windows you are running and search for "Disk Management"
Look for the partition of the external drive you are using. It will be given a letter other than C: drive. May be D: E: F: etc etc etc. Sometimes your optic drive is the D: drive, you may need to purchase a program like Everest Ultimate to locate ALL your items on the MOBO.
If your able to find the External in Disk Management, you should be able to format it, rename it, change its functions, etc etc.

Good Luck

I have toshiba external hard drive but when i plug it my laptop wont work anymore it will hang.

Hi

i would go to your device manager
then go to the top of that box and hover over the icons on the top right
one of those icons will say scan for new hardware
so hit the scan icon
windows may or maynot reconize the external hard drive
then leaving the external drive plugged into the usb
restart the laptop and maybe windows will then reconize it

if not please come back to us again stating what operating system you have

many thanks

How do i get my computer to use my external hard drive which i just installed

Which Operating system are you currently using? By default XP/Vista/7 should have generic drivers sufficient for using the device as external storage, To Check and make sure the drive is being properly recognized simply double click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop if using windows XP. Or in Vista/Windows 7, click on the Start Button and then scroll over to Computer and Click. the hard drive should be listed in there. Take note of the drive letter . If you'd like to save items to it simply save to the new drive ( when within the program of your choice, Word, Windows Media Player etc ) by selecting the new drive in the "Save To" Window. ( Be Default most windows systems should store all information on the C:\ Drive ) your new external drive should be listed with a different letter ( F:\ G:\ etc )

your hard drive is corrupted. disconnect it until Windows loads.

when windows loads, run disk checker. right click your drive, go to properties. select tools, then disk checker.
let it run.
