Question about Dell Inspiron 518 Desktop Computer

1 Answer

On my Dell Inspiron 518 there is an orange light on the motherboard that stays lit constantly. Is this normal? We went away for a day and shut the computer down normally, when we returned home the following day the computer would not power up at all. The green light was on on the back but the computer would do nothing. We had Geek Squad look at it and they said the power supply was good. We have another computer at home so we took the power supply box from it and put it in the Dell (same wattage) and the computer started up just fine (although we could not connect power to our cd drive since the cord was too short). We noticed that when we had the old power box connected the orange light was on, and also when we hooked up the other power supply box it was still orange. I just want to make sure that the orange light is normal, or if something else is going to go wrong with the Dell Inspiron 518. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Will not turn on when power button is Dell Inspiron 518 will not turn on when power button is pressed. Green LED on back of powersupply lights and orange LED on motherboard turns on. No fan operation on...

Green LED on back of power supply indicates it's getting power. That does not mean that it's distributing the power voltages to the computer. You could have a bad power supply or a bad motherboard. Just to make surethat nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cablesto CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

Inspiron Battery Light Flashing Orange

Battery.

Dell has a chip internal to the battery programed to shut down after a certain number of charge cycles. This means every time you plug the laptop in with the battery installed. When it reaches this determined number the battery effectively shuts down, even though technically it's still good. There have been loads of complaints on the net toward Dell over this issue. I have myself experience this. Battery good one day, powered down, went home, powered up... only to receive the deadly flashing light. Only cure is to replace battery. Several hacks trying to get around this but they're all horrible. Bad Dell - bad, bad Dell!

Dell inspiron 1100 wont stay on

Normally the battery light will rapidly flash orange if the battery is defective. It will alternate between orange and green if it is too hot to charge. Or it will either flash orange or be a steady orange if the battery is low or completely discharged. Based on this and the fact that you cannot get it to stay on for more than 7 seconds, I would have to say that you need to recharge the battery by plugging the laptop into an AC outlet. After all, it can't run without the juice.

Intermittently the power button constant orange fan full speed

Try removing the battery from the motherboard if its not soldered and leave it for an hour then out it back in, that might reset you bios and fix your problem.

How old is the battery? The battery is considered a consumable product. It really has to be replaced usually after a year or so. You may try updating your computer's bios software though to see if it will correct it. Updating this software is a bit risky and if not done correctly may further damage your system's motherboard.
Click this to see the instructions on how to run the update.
Click this to start the update. It can only be run though if the battery still has 30% charge. If you get an error during the update, you must replace the battery.
