Question about KitchenAid KSSS36FMX / KSSS36FMB Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

I left the door open for a while on the refrigerator side. Now, the compressor runs constantly. The freezer side temperature is indicated to be -18 while the refrigerator side temperature is indicated to be 2. The regrigerator side temperature is obviously not 2 F. but rather is more than 32 F.

I accidently left the refrigerator-side door open on my Kichenaid KSSS36FMB built in refrigerator. Now, the indicated freezer-side temperature is 8. The indicated freezer-side temperature seems to be about right but the indicated refrigerator side temperature seems to be low by about 30 degrees. What should I do?

The evaporator coils have likely iced up from the room air let in which insulates them and makes the refrigeration inefficient. If this is a frost free, it should correct itself in a day or at least improve. If not a service call is probably the best course of action. Also get an independent thermometer so you know the actual temperatures if the built in thermometers are in question.

Hi terry_oldber,

There are several factors that can cause the issue that you have right now with your machine. The common and easiest one to address are dirty condenser coil. To fix this problem, a little cleaning is all that is needed. When the room temperature is cooler the air going over the condenser coil will still get enough heat away to keep the refrigerator cooling. However when the room starts to heat up and the air does not absorb as much of the heat the refrigerator will start to get warmer.

Make sure that the refrigerator has enough air clearance on all sides. Ensure that air can flow over and between the shelves as well as over the items stored there. Overfilling the refrigerator or freezer will result in inefficient and inadequate cooling.

Verify that the door light switch is working properly. Push the switch with your finger to verify the light is turning off. If the light stays on, it will actually warm the interior of the refrigerator. If the door is misaligned or the switch malfunctions, the refrigerator may become warm as a result of the non-operation of the evaporator fan and the heat generated by the interior light.

Also, do not forget to check the door seals. The seal should make smooth continuous contact with the refrigerator case. When the seal does not seal completely, warm air enters the appliance. This results in more frequently compressor operation and possibly the inability of the appliance to maintain proper temperature. If the door seal does not seal properly, the door may need to be realigned or the seal replaced.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

I have an admiral refrigerator admiral designer series 21.1 cu ft.the motor is constanly running 8 to9 hrs at a time the left side of the door is always hot and the top of the refrigerator a repairman came...

yes compressor runs and shuts off every 8 - 10 hours for a half hour for defrost system mode. but ur hot left side may be a sign of issues needing to be addressed>

FRIDGE COILS or door walls SEEM VERY HOT:

The condenser coils do get hot. They can even be to hot to comfortably touch and this is normal.

The refrigerator should not run constantly but shut off with each defrost cycle.

Running constantly and never cycling off can indicate a cooling problem.

One thing to try is to wait till it has been running a few minutes then open the door and turn your cycling thermostat towards the off position. It should cycle off before getting to the off position on the dial.

If it does not cycle off then it's not getting cold enough to satisfy the thermostat. This is likely the reason the refrigerator runs all the time.

A thermometer in a glass of water can be used to check the temperatures in the refrigerator section.

You can check that all fans are running.

Why is the temperature fluctuating.

Service engeener always checks the average temperature inside freezer or refrigerator compartment. When you turn on freezer, the compressor starts to circulate gas through the system and the temperature in the freezer is decreasing (go to minus). When inside of the freezer reaches the set temperature the compressor is switched off and temperature will increasing. What will be the difference of inside temperature depends on the type of refrigerator and type of thermostat or sensor and moves to max. 8-9 degrees. With the advent of new "No Frost" refrigerator, this difference was reduced to only a few degrees Celsius, thanks to the fan inside the refrigerator and NTC sensor.
So 29 + 14 = 43; 43/2 = 21.5 which means that your average temperature of -21.5 which is not too much deviation from the set temperature of -18 and I think that is ok.

My 18 year old refrigerator GE model TFX24FG freezer side is not keeping food frozen. Refrigerator side seems to be working normally.

The refrigerator side is at present working properly , but slowly slowly, it will also loose its cooling. This will happen because, freezer side is the side which cools first, then the refrigerator side ( also called as fridge side)., gets cooled. If freezer side is not cooling / freezing properly then fridge side will also loose its cooling ability.------------ And later on both section will loose its cooling.----------- As per the present situation, it indicates problem with compressor or problem with freezer side door not closing properly.---------- Or the temperature in freezer section is not set to proper cooling/ freezing.--------- So first inspect temperature, is it set right? If ok, then check the freezer door , is it properly closed? If ok, then its compressor problem.? The compressor is running non stop, this is indication of compressor problem.---------- Click this link below for more help:--- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/06/both-refrigerator-and-freezer-not.html ----------- Later on both section will loose its cooling. -------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Freezer FZ175 Red Warning Light is flashing

The flashing red light indicates the problem in the temperature of the unit. The temperature is rising over then required so the red light is flashing. There are some possibilities that you will have to get checked.
1) Make sure your freezer/refrigerator door is closing properly and sealing all around. If the doors are not closing properly then this can lead to rise in temperature.
2) If doors are proper and closed properly then other possibility is to check the compressor .Check the compressor is it running properly or its not running.Beside the compressor there is a fan if the fan is running the compressor is turning on if fan is not running the compressor is not running. If the unit is not getting very cold this also indicates the problem is in the compressor section.A weak or faulty compressor causes the temperature rise problem.
3) If compressor also checks out ok then the other possibility is fault in the thermostat of the unit. The thermostat is getting overheated and this is causing the red light flashing.
4) Before replacing any part in the unit try the defrost procedure first .Keep the unit unplugged from power and keep both the freezer/refrigerator doors open .let it remain unplugged for 24 hours. Then reconnect the power and check for some time.If the unit works properly that means defrost procedure solved the problem. But if same error light comes On flashing that means the faulty part needs replacement.
You can get required parts for your refrigerator from the on-line sites like :--
www.partsselect.com.
Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
