Lawn mower has set for 2 years and I can't get it to fire...I spray carb cleaner in the carb and it runs until it burns off. I belive that tells me that I am not getting fuel. How do I fix it?

  • If you had gas in the tank the entire two year the gas is stale and oxidized. First get rid of that old gas and out new gas in or it may never start.
  • If that does not help then you may have gummed up the carburetor and it;s time for a rebuild. But try new gas first. Or at least dump an additive into the tank to make the gas more usable.

I suggest replacing the fuel first. We know there is spark as it runs with fuel added to the carburetor. If removing the old stale fuel does not help then you will need to rebuild that carburetor. Anytime a mower is set for a while the old fuel should be removed and run dry to prevent gumming of the carburetor.

When I bought the mower from a friend I drove it to my backyard and ran it dry knowing I still had to landscape my whole backyard. So there is fresh fuel

    • Good deal. So the fuel should not have gummed up the carburetor as there was no fuel to gum it up. There is a diaphragm that goes bad often in the carburetor. Thing is it is running when you add fuel. So the problem would seem getting the fuel from the tank to the carburetor. Have you fooled with the choke at all? Take that air filter off the top of the choke and see if that butterfly pops open when you attempt to start that engine. If the carburetor was malfunctioning then it would not fire off when gas is added manual.

I found the the solenoid that sits under the carb was not activating and alowing the fuel in. Replaced it and noe it works.

Thanks for your input. I just thought I would let you know so if this happens to someone else

NO ONE EVER PUTS ENOUGH INFO IN THEIR QUESTIONS!!!

...SO..I'LL GUESS: STARTS AND RUNS, THEN DIES...RIGHT?

TRY MY "ON THE MACHINE CARB FIX:
REMOVE AIR CLEANER TO ACCESS MOUTH OF CARB
SPRAY CARB CLEANER UNTIL YOU FILL FLOAT BOWL, AND IT STARTS TO RUN OUT OF CARB
LET SIT OVERNIGHT, DO IT AGAIN...WAIT A WHILE....THEN REMOVE SPARK PLUG, POUR A SMALL AMOUNT OF GAS INTO PLUG HOLE...REINSTALL PLUG...IT SHOULD FIRE UP AND START RUNNING RIGHT.
IT MAY TAKE A FEW TRIES! IF NOT REBUILD CARB, BECAUSE A FLOAT HAS PROBABLY SANK

Mower starts good but only runs 5 minutes befor stalling out and won't start again until cool. It idles OK when blade is NOT engaged. Cause? And how do you set the carb adjustment screws to max. p

No adjustment for carb on newer mowers. All mowers now have a low oil cutoff. Ensure oil is full. 30w oil. If any grey is observed vin oil drain all oil. Moisture in oil. Dump old oil out every 2 yrs and refill. Ensure spark pluf is clean and gapped correctly. Ensure air filter is clean. Replace spark plug and air filter each year. Always use Stabile in gas. Spray outside of carb with carb cleaner to ensure proper choke movement.

Toro recycler mower won't stay running

take apart the carb float and clean it out, then take apart the rest of the carb and spray cleaner through it. sounds like you might have some old gas turned to jelly in your carb thats plugging it too much for the typical pressures inside the carb to **** through

2010 model 20 hp Briggs motor. Fuel going through fuel line, but not going into carberator. Motor runs good for about 15 min, but after heating up this fuel problem starts. After cooling down for an...

Two things:
1 Is fuel coming out of the fuel line. Older mowers have old fuel lines and they tend to get weak and collapse went they warm up with engine heat. Replace the old fuel line.
2 deposits in the carb. take off the air cleaner, start it up and spray a good carb cleaner in the carb until the engine dies. Put some 'seafoam' in the gas and a little in the oil and put the air cleaner back on and start the mower and mow on FULL THROTTLE. this should claen out the carb. Yes the mower will run rough for awhile.

these two cheap fixes will solve 85 % of carb problems. GOOD LUCK

Mower surges its a 5.5hp craftsman mower

Carburetor possibly needs cleaning. Initially, remove air filter, start mower and while it is running, spray some aerosol carb/choke cleaner into the carb thru air intake area. Continue doing this several times but not too fast or heavy to make it stall and then spray it heavily until engine dies. Let it sit for several minutes and then try a restart. If no difference in performance is noticed, carb may have to be removed and cleaned in bath-type cleaner and governor settings will need to be checked also.
Please vote on this solution.

Poulan 6.75 Lawn mower will not start

Remove spark plug, clean and dry. Replace plug. Remove air filter. Spray WD-40 into carb opening; one second blast. Turn over engine, (pull handle). Engine should start briefly and run for 3 seconds.  If not, you are not getting spark to spark plug. If engine starts, you have a dirty carb and you can buy a rebuild kit from manufacture.

Mower will not stay running unless primer button continuouly pushed. Gas seems to not be independently flowing, requires manual priming to stay running. As soon as primer gas used, will stop running.

The tube in the bottom of the carb. is probably clogged. Remove the carb, and bowl and try spraying WD-40 through the tube, it should spray into the venturi if it doesn't try using a tip cleaner to unclog the tube.
