Double check your outlet with another appliance to be sure it has power. If power wire close to plug may be comeing apart.

Would probably be best to buy a new iron, not powering on, would indicate a internal problem, really in my opinion it would be best to buy a new one. without knowing more about the iron you have..

1. If there is sign of power (e.g. light is on), the heating element may be broken.
2. If there is no sign of power, check the power point (socket), iron power plug, cable and the power on switch. If everything is fine, you need to get it repaired.

Try to open the electric iron and locate the thermostat . Secure the electric iron against any metal object that may cause electric shock or short circuit and plug it to a power source. Slowly adjust the temperature and using an electric tester check the power before the thermostat and after the thermostat. If there is a power before the thermostat and has no power after the thermostat then your problem is the thermostat replace it with a new one.

Bring the iron to a Hardware store, ask for a set of tools right for the type of screws (maybe Torx, Security Torx, tri-wing, bristol and others).

Once you can open the iron and access to the cord you may change the power cord. it is easy.

Power goes on & off because the power cord is broken. This failure is very common on irons.

Current = 1700 watts / 120 Volts = 14 Amps

If you live in Europe then -

Current = 1700 watts / 240 Volts = 7 Amps

Be sure your breaker and extension cord are rated for the amperage.

Power Cord is bad and power cuts on and off not allowing the proper heat. When power cuts off you lose heat and the iron fills up with water and not steam then when power returns you have to much steam.

I bought a new replacement iron at Sears for $17.99. It is not worth fixing my old one .
