Question about Heating & Cooling

4 Answers

I have an AO Smith Century E Plus 3 hp 3 phase 208/230/460V belt driven motor. The wiring diagram on the motor is very vague. There's nine wires coming out of this motor, AO Smith p/n 7-850111-01-0J. I'm just a little confused on how to wire it in. Very expensive motor and hard to get, I just don't want to blow it.

This is a tri-phased motor in which the coils are joined in a stellar configuration: one end of the coils is joined together internally while the other 3 ends are set externally as the power connectors.
Because this motor is a special one, capable of functioning on different voltages the coils were designed with intermediary outputs so basically you have 3 sets of the 3 phased outputs, corresponding to the 3 available voltages.
You must identify the wires for each pair. You will do that by measuring the resistance of the coils between 2 of the wires. You will need a very sensible ohmmeter for that. Once you have determined the 3 pairs just connect the appropriate pair to your tri-phazed mains source.

But i must warn you, if you don't identify the wires correctly the engine will be instantly fried. If you aren't absolutely sure you can do the job correctly then call someone who can.

Hi,

Here is the connection diagram...
Low voltage would be if you are using 208/240v and use the high voltage if you are using 460v

Hello
This is probably being done in pairs. Say wires 1 and 2 3 and 4 5and 6 would make up your 3 hot wires. Then 789 would be tied together.

This is an example only! I dont know what the diagram shows on the motor. Each combination would depend on the voltage you have available.208 230 460 also the amps.

460 volts would draw the least amount of amps.

Im replacing a 2 speed Hayward motor with a AO smith 1 speed motor. I need to no how to wire the 1 speed

to wire a single speed motor you use only the black, white and green wire. there is usually a wiring diagram on the side of the motor to show how this is done.
no wiring diagram then put the black wire on the L1 or H1 post and the white wire to the common and of course the green to ground

You looked at nameplate on motor to get the rating information?
Rating plate may also have small wiring diagram.

I was looking at AO Smith single-phase 2-speed pool pump motors yesterday.
The rating plates show wiring.
Open following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/AO-smith-rating-label-500.jpg

Notice the image shows the words: Brown White Line Line.
Brown and white are wire colors. Line means 'power' from breaker box.
240V will have two Line wires, L1 and L2. 115Volt will have Line or L1 and N or Neutral.
Look at your rating plate and then add a comment with clear description of what appears on rating plate, or include in-focus photo. Put your camera in macro to take close-ups.
http://www.fixya.com/support/r6568559-post_photograph_fixya_questions_answers

Your wall outlet has 2 plug-in slots. One is wider that the other.
'Line' will refer to Hot wire from breaker which corresponds to smaller slot on outlet.
'N' or 'Neutral' is neutral wire from breaker box which corresponds to wider slot on outlet.
