Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

2 Answers

Make a very loud noise when I try to vaccuum the carpet. It sounds like it's something in the brush up front. Belts look good and obstructions are gone. Not sure what else to do.

I have a DC07 Animal, and it's making a loud clacking noise when I vacuum. I tried to take off the front and clean it out but it's still amking that noise and smells like it's burning the motor.

  • Try to lower your wheels a bit which will raise your vacuum a little off the ground. When you vacuum a bare floor you want the vacuum as close to the floor as possible. When you vacuum a carpet if you don't raise it a bit then the brush will grab far to hard on the carpet ripping the carpet up and possibly burning the motor up. Try raising the vacuum a bit, or a lot, and this should fix your problem.

    • Oh the Dyson, OK, self adjusting wheels. Make sure the hose is disengaged and set to floor.

    • The smell is more than likely a clog given the things you have already performed. Take that canister off and turn the vacuum off and tell me do you feel air coming toward you from where the canister goes? If not you have a clog and you will have to start pulling the vacuum apart to find the clog and relieve it.

    • Double check the brush to make sure the belt is aligned properly too.

    Regards,

    Tony

    • That yellow knob up front is your bare floor/carpet adjustment. make sure it is set to carpet as well.

If the belts are good and not slipping, the noise could be a bearing issue.

Sounds like the beater bar hits the front plastic makes a loud awful noise

Hi Cathy,

Your DC33's brush control is designed to make a ratcheting sound to warn you if something is jamming the brush bar. You should be able to resolve this by making sure the cleaner head is free of any obstructions, and removing any threads or hair from around the brush bar. For guidance in doing this, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc33/dc33-multi-floor/dc33-maintaining-your-dyson-machine/how-to-remove-a-blockage/from-the-brushbar/removing-debris-from-the-brushbar

This should resolve the issue, but if you're still concerned about the machine after following these steps, please give us a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US), so we can provide further assistance.

Loud noise with belt protection system On

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14. The knob you're describing is the brush control, which turns the brushbar on when set to 'Carpets', and off when set to 'Hard floors'. The machine may not pick up hair from carpets if you have it set to 'Hard Floors'.

The brush control system is also designed to make a ratcheting sound to warn you if something is jamming the brushbar. The easiest way to check for and remove any obstructions is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=668&product=DC14-ALLFLOORS_US

Once you've removed any threads, hair and other obstructions from around the brushbar and cleaner head, you should find this resolves the issue. However, if you've tried this and are still concerned, please get in touch with us directly so we can help. You can call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards,

Jack

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14 Animal. The cleaner's brush control system is designed to make a ratcheting sound to alert you if the brushbar is jammed. Although you've already cleaned the brushbar, it's a good idea to follow the steps shown in our online support guide to make sure you haven't missed any obstructions in the cleaner head:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=650&product=DC14-ANIMAL_US

This should allow you to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've checked the brushbar and cleaner head are clear of threads, hair, or other obstructions, but the cleaner still seems to be making the ratcheting noise, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you to identify the cause of the issue, and will be able to recommend the best course of action. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Older Dyson 07 Animal, loud ratcheting noise on carpet setting

That is an indication that the belts are worn, stretched or broken. You simply need to replace the belt. Here is a link to the belt(s) you need and a manual you can view:

Loud noise when I start the vacuum in carpet position

Not exactly a solution, but more of an explanation. The noise is caused by a ratchet device that's designed to protect the belt if the brush roller becomes blocked. It's a bit like a clutch that slips when resistance on the brush gets too great. The noise will occur if there's a solid blockage, of course, but it will also occur whenever the machine senses excessive resistance. This may happen on carpets with really thick pile, but can also happen if the carpet is loosely fitted and can be sucked up tight to the roller by the force of the vacuum.
Small consolation, but the problem should lessen as the brush wears. Meanwhile, if all else fails, switch the brush off (hard floors mode) while vacuuming the problem carpet(s).

Suden loud noise when vacuming carpet

Hi.

Check that brush roller (beater bar) is free to turn with no obstruction.
If it is still noisey after doing this try this site for Dyson repair manuals.
