Yes, you need a tstat, a contactor, and a transformer.
Contactor runs the fan, transformer sends the low voltage to the tstat. Tstat turns on contactor for fan and compressor for cooling

Heater not heating enough

Electric furnaces have strip heat inside of them. Depending on the model, size, etc, is how much heat the system can provide. Many times, if the system has worked in the past and started to have problems later, it's because you have lost half or more of your heat strips. They come in different sizes, 10kw, 15kw, 20kw, but ran on different contactors. So if you have a tripped breaker, faulty heat sequencer, etc, you can still have heat, but not the full amount. I strongly suggest any electrical related problems be look at by a qualified technician when dealing with air handlers. Hope this helps!

Tempstar Air Conditioner wont come on

Sounds like you need a new contactor in the condenser. The low voltage is grounded. Remove the low voltage (likely 2 wires) at the condenser and wire nut the wires leading inside. With an insulated screwdriver manually push in the contactor and be sure both compressor and fan run. Then replace fuse and turn power on to air handler with a call for cooling. Obviously the outdoor unit won't run because you unhooked the low voltage but if fuse doesn't trip then it's likely the contactor. Good Luck

WIRING THE THERMOSTAT TO AC UNIT THEN FROM THE UNIT TO HANDLER

Generally, you would go from the thermostat to the air handler, and then, from the air handler to the outdoor unit. I don't know if you have a heat pump or not, so I will give you a simple diagram and you can contact me if you need more.

Thermostat : Y G R W and sometimes C
Air handler: Y G R W and C
Outdoor unit: two wires connecting to the contactor ( not heat pump)

Thermostat; Y--------------Y(air handler cooling)------------------one side of contactor, outdoor unit
G-------------G (air handler, fan)
R--------------R (air handler ,hot)
W-------------W (air handler, heat)
C--------------C (air handler, common)------------other side of contactor, outdoor unit

This is a typical wiring diagram. Just contact me if you have something different. Hope this helps. Stay cool. mark

Heat strips do not energize during defrost cycles air below 50 degrees up to 14 minutes

if your heat strips are not coming on, then there are a few things to check.

The first one would be that the heat strips are actually working. The easiest way to complete this task is to turn the system on into emergency heat and turn the thermostat up. If you get heat accompanied by the traditional strip heat burnt smell, then you know the electric heat strips are working.

The second thing would be that the air handler is receiving a command for heat during defrost cycle. If the command is present with no heat, then you most likely have either a wiring issue or a failed electrical relay or contactor.

The third thing would be the defrost board itself, for it is the component that calls for electric heat strips to come on during a defrost cycle. You may or may not be able to force the defrost board into a defrost cycle and then check that the heat strips are on or not.

It sounds as though your defrost board is bad with the symptoms you are describing.

Good luck.

My home air conditoning compresor doesn't always come on.

All timers are located on the main control board in the air handler " inside unit ". There is a circuit board in it near the heat strips and it has a couple of relays that are notorius for going out. Replace the board and the condenser unit " outside unit " should start to operate properly.
