Question about Maytag Dryers

1 Answer

My dryer switch is the kind you pull out and hold to turn it on. Most of the time it does not work. Sometimes, I can get it to start if I try to start it in another position and then turn it around to the right spot and try again. Other than doing a funky dance in front of it, is there a way I can fix this myself??? Thanks!!

In all probability, you have a defective or worn switch.. If you are handy and can gain access to the control section where that switch is mounted.. check for a loose connection on that switch. If you do not find anything loose, then get a replacement switch from an appliance parts provider ( many many are online.. such as mcminone.com ) and replace it,... Conversely.. you can continue to do your funky dance ..bet the neighbors love that..LOL .. Hope that helps

Wont Run unless hold start switch

You most likely have a faulty motor centrifugal switch. This switch is engaged when the motor starts rotating. The switch itself could be faulty or the inertia-mechanism that activates the switch could be faulty. The inertia-mechanism usually has two small springs that pull it back into its resting position when the motor stops turning. I have found that the springs will sometimes break and produce the symptom you have described.

Below is a diagram of common centrifugal switches. The switch will be mounted on the end of the motor.

This sounds like it could be an intermittent door switch problem, or a loose connection. the next time it does not want to start up, try pushing the door closed and hold it in. If it starts, then it is the door switch just not quite clicking. Try it and let me know. If this helps, please rate my answer. Thank you. If it doesn't help, we will take it further and try to get you fixed up.

How to replace door switch on old kenmore stac.dryer 110.88752792

Door switch If the door switch or the door-switch actuator is defective, the dryer won't work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch.Check online for the part repairclinic.com has it for $14.00 not bad

The dryer 'On/Off' switch not working. Dryer does not turn on.

Sounds like the internal parts of the switch are damaged and not allowing the required circuit to be closed. There are many kinds of dryers and switches. If you can pull the switch out and observe the wiring on the back, it may be possible to "jump" the wires. Use extreme caution not to electricute yourself. Basically if it's just a push on to start dryer, all that needs to be done is the two wires in the switch to contact each other for a second. DO NOT TOUCH THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. Hold the insulated wire in each hand and touch together briefly. This should start the dryer. DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES EXPOSED. Put back onto swith being careful not to touch the metal connectors.

The dryer will not stay running.

When you hold the start switch you are energizing the start winding of the motor. If the motor does not take off and run, the most likely cause is the centrifugal switch inside the dryer's motor is not being switched. It is switched by a spring loaded collar on the motor shaft which moves when the motor starts to run, and again back when it stops. Often times this collar begins to stick on older dryers. Sometimes you can free it up by cleaning the dryer motor with an air compressor and hitting the collar with some spray lube. This only works some times. The only sure fix is to replace the motor, which unfortunately is rather expensive and a fair amount of work. Please don't bother rating this, as anything but a Fix-Ya lowers my score.

Dryer won't start unless I slam the door

Not normal. Check door switch. As a test you can jump it out to see if the dryer works then. if that does not help then , I i would consider replacing the starter switch.

DRYER ONLY WORKS BY HOLDING DOWN THE TIMER BUTTON

You need to replace or repair the timer control, this is not a faulty motor control unit.

You find parts by entering model number here.
