Races at idle

If the idle cannot be controled by the idle screw ( screw marked with an I or T on the side of the carb ) then you may well have an air leak through a crank seal or a gasket.

My Homelite 46 cc 18" chainsaw has a very high idle. How can I fix that?

Turn the idle speed screw (not the H and L jet needles) CCW until the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Hi how to tune homelite 330 chain saw carby, idle

Before adjusting anything, check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Check the condition of the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Tighten all carburetor fasteners. Make sure you have fresh fuel mix in the tank. Does the primer bulb pull fresh fuel into itself when pumped? Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out CCW 1-1/2 turns each. This is a basic setting and should allow the engine to start and run. Start the engine and allow it to warm up, then pull the throttle full on. Adjust H needle CW until the engine starts to speed up, but still 4-stroking. Proper final adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW for fairly good idle, but still allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine will continue to run. Hope this helps!

How to stART HOMELITE 18 INCH TIMBERLINE

Make sure you have fresh fuel mix in the tank. Pump the primer bulb about 6 times or less until the bulb draws fuel into it. This fills the carburetor with fuel. Close the choke and set the fast idle if the throttle trigger has a button near it--otherwise, operating the choke auto-sets the fast idle. Don't operate the throttle again until the engine is running. Turn on the ignition switch and pull the engine through smartly. It should start within several pulls. If nothing happens, then get back to us for some troubleshooting help. Hope this gets it running!

New Homelite 16" chain saw is difficult to impossible to start.

Read and follow the start procedure in the manual, most say to open the choke once the saw attempts to start. Most operators miss this or do not hear the cough and flood the saw. Your manual is probably similar, if not successful with the following maybe time to return it. One thing that might impact starting, what is your elevation? Your saw was setup at near sea level, if you 4000' it may need an adjustment. The store where purchased will probably recommend someone if asked.

Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on.
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on.
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull).

I have a homelite chain saw and is out of setting.

You need to set the mixtures for the carburetor. You will find a Low and High adjustment screw. At idle turn the screw in or clockwise until the rps starts to decrease. Then start turning it out till you hit max idle rpms. Turn screw back in a quarter to half turn and it should be idling smoothly. Be careful here and get someone to hold saw if necessary but hold in throttle to full speed and do the same with high adjustment screw. turn it in till rpm starts to drop then back it out until you get to max rpm and it won't go any higher then turn it back in a half a turn.
