It's safe but not efficient You probably need to clean your heat displacement coils. (Black Coils) under or on the back side of refrigerator. Use a refrigerator coil cleaning brush and scrub thoroughly. Use a vacuum and hose to **** up the dirt. Hope this works out for you . Thanks

Compressors do usually get a bit warm during operation, but unless you left the door open for an extended period, or cooled warm foods in your freezer, the compressor would periodically run, then stop and cool off. If you observe your refrigerator for a while and notice that it is running much more than usual, it may to be serviced, possibly to look for a coolant leak or other similar issue.

If the compressor is hot, then the temperature inside the unit may be compromised if there is a sealed system issue or a restriction in the unit. Call a professional to be safe.

My compressor is really hot

If the compressor is almost too hot to touch, then you have a concern and need a repair technician. It is normal for the compressor to be a little warm, but not too much where you cannot keep your hand there.

Not getting cold enough on the inside... the exterior too hot to touch.. why could this be?

Compressor relay could be fried. Feel the compressor. If it is too hot to touch then check your relay. The relays contacts could be welded together making bot windings stay powered up and overheating the compressor causing compressor shutdown on overload.

the compressor will run hot,but you should be able to touch it without burning yourself.(when you compress a gas, heat is generated as it turns to liquid and when it expands back to a gas it absorbs heat, the principal of a fridge...)

Compressors will normally run hot to the touch, but should not have a burning smell. If the compressor does need to be replaced you would be better off getting a new freezer. Compressor replacement with the labor can run into more than a new freezer.

Upright freezer hot to the touch on the sides.

inspect the unit for a fan near the compressor not to be alarmed some do not have a fan if so insure that it is running while the compressor is running also some defrost problems will cause this the unit runs for a long time heating the compressor and by way passing the heat along

Food in freezer is thawing, compressor very hot to the touch

It sounds like the motor to the circulating fan is wearing out . This fan is hard to diagnose as it will spin the blade , but as you said it will not spin fast enough to circulate air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The motor is DC non brush type. It will cost a minimum of $300.00 to repair/replace this fan assembly, but it is worth that compared to replacing the refrigerator
