Question about Dell Inspiron 531s Desktop Computer

3 Answers

I have a dell inspiron 531s desktop and it keeps shutting down spontaneously. after that it tries to come back on but repeatedly turns off. I did a complete factory restore and it worked for about 30 minutes then it shuts off again. It gives me a message saying low disk space. I have replaced the power cord and the fans are working correctly. Please help me.

I have the same computer and I was having the same problem with the computer just shutting down for no reason. The fan would get very loud sometimes. I cleaned the inside real good and applied new silver thermal compound to the heatsink and the computer was still shutting off. I figured that the computer was not getting enough air flow inside it's small compact case so I opened the case to allow more air flow and put a small desk fan pointed to the inside. It now runs great and has stopped shutting down. I hope this helps you out.

You need to go to start>control panel >system> advanced>start up and recovery>and clear automatically restart. The next thing You need to do is get rid of all the programs you don't use any more.Start>control panel>add and remove programs(XP) Programs and Features(Vista & Win 7).Highlight a program and hit remove. The more programs you get rid of the more you reclaim hard drive space.Next start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup.By now you should notice a boost in performance. You can buy a bigger hard drive if you want.I burn my pictures on DVDs and do the same with documents. One other thing that you can do later on is get rid of all your restore points by turning off and then turning it back on.be sure to make a new restore point.I hope this helps you.Thank You & good luck.

Dell inspiron 531s desktop tower fan keeps on running is this right for this to do this kinda annoying!!

yes, it's to keep the cabinet cool to help the CPU dissipate heat and not over heat.
If it is a lot of noise then it may need to be cleaned or replace.

I have vista on my dell inspiron 531s. Once it goes into hibernation, it won't come out of it when I move the mouse. I have to turn it off without powering down correctly. How do I fix this?

If it didn't used to be a problem, but now is, and you've added some program recently, try removing that program. Other than that, the solution is probably too difficult to track down, so open the power settings in your control panel and set the power savings mode to never, never, never to keep it from hibernating.

Memory card slot

The Dell Inspiron 531s does not come with a memory card reader slot.

This is Dell's specifications on the Inspiron 531s,

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/desktops/inspndt_53xs/pd.aspx?refid=inspndt_53xs&s=dfh&cs=22

Left-click on the Tech Specs tab.

You could use a memory card reader that attaches to any of the computers USB ports.
Here is an example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1187796&CatId=942

Scrolling down the page, shows you an animated gif of this memory card reader.
