Question about Amana ABB1927DE Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have been without the use of my freezer for about two months now. Fridge is cold but freezer is just above freezing temp. I also noticed it is almost constantly running except for a short break when the defrost timer kicks in. It's about 9 years old and a 19 cu/ft bottom freezer type. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have cleaned my coils the best I could since they are underneath the unit. You really think this is all it is? Use a good wire brush? How about any cleaner? I heard you are really not suppose to put it on it's side.

I used a brush and cleaned up the coils more. Also checked to see if the seals around the doors are tight, which they are. The doors use to **** in and hold really tight right after closing the refridge/freezer but dont anymore. I waited a night after cleaning to see if it helped The temp in the freezer was still just above freezing. Any more suggestions?

Not sure what a factory indicated setting is but there are two separate controls. One each for the freezer and fridge. The freezer controls turns off the entire unit off and right now it's on 2. I tried different settings but no help. The fridge goes from 1- 7 I think and right now it's on 4. I tried all sorts of settings but the unit constantly runs. I also cleaned all the seals yesterday and checked for cracking. They looked good.

I did set both at 5 and went on vacation. I filled up some ice cube trays to see if they would freeze. Returned to find there is no ice in the ice trays and fridge still runs continuously. The ice cube maker also seemed to stop working properly too. Could it possibly be either a thermostat issue or loss of refrigerant?

  • rick rischman Jun 03, 2011

Yes fan is running constantly. Will not shut off except every few days in defrost mode.

  • rick rischman Jun 04, 2011

Yes I have completely taken off the entire back cover and physically seen the fan running after pulling the entire fridge out to do it. In fact I did this three times to check if there was anything else I noticed that could be the problem in the last few weeks.

  • rick rischman Jun 04, 2011

I just opened up the compartment in the freezer behind the wall. The coils have ice buildup where the thermostat connects to it. let it defrost but still not any cooler in freezer. Any new suggestions?

  • rick rischman Jun 04, 2011

It was only a small chunk of ice where the coils start which is normal. The coils after two hours are not getting cold enough for the freezer to work. Its not in defrost cycle since no heat is coming from that element. I really think its either a loss of coolant from a leak or compressor problem. Either way expensive so I'm tired of monkeying around with this thing for weeks. Let me know what you think.

Definitely Clean your coils With a good coil brush, they are about 4.00 at the hardware store. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question.

I would start there unless you are sure they are very clean, This is the only way heat has to escape.

Get the refrigerator coil brush. Not wire.

If this turns out not to be the problem the next step would be to look at air escaping from the seals.

  • Ryan Pries May 18, 2011

What is your refrigerator temp set at? it should be at factory indicated setting, Any colder will let to much air out of the freezer.
Also try cleaning the door seals with soap and warm water, Just to be sure they seal properly.

  • Ryan Pries May 19, 2011

Thats got to be the problem, If the numbers are 1-9 both should be set a 5. Try that and wait about 5 hours and see if the temp corrects.

  • Ryan Pries Jun 03, 2011

One more thing to rule out is that the fan is working, Is the fan next to the compressor running?
Could you send me the model number so I can look up the schematic?

  • Ryan Pries Jun 04, 2011

Just to clarify, the fan you checked is the one in the back next to the compressor? You should have to remove the cover on the back of the refrigerator, after pulling it away from the wall.
This is not the one in the freezer compartment.

  • Ryan Pries Jun 04, 2011

was it a solid block of ice or just a small area? You may have tho replace the defrost thermostat if its not completing auto defrost.
Also make sure that the vent is open.

  • Ryan Pries Jun 05, 2011

Yep I think we have exhausted all affordable fixes It Looks like the compressor is the suspect.
Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
    Take care

Freezer not working when its cold in the garage.

Where do you keep the fridge? If you keep it outside then most likely the condensor coils in the freezer may be freezing over and the only way to fix that is to keep it above 40 degrees outside the fridge.

You can use a hairdryer on the frozen parts.
The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

Ge fridge GSS25LFGww, fridge part freezing food

Hi, Change the controls back to normal settings. Make sure the freezer is getting 0 to 5 above. If the freezer is getting cold enough, try and turn the cold control to 1 and see if the refrigerator shuts off. It sounds like the cold control in not working properly and will need to be replaced. NOTE: The freezer temp has to be right temp or the fresh food side will not work proper.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Frigidiare PLHS39EESS9 Ice build up in bottom of Freezer

I had the same problem with my Jenn-air side-by-side

Your freezer has a defrost cycle and when the freezer temp is set too cold, your drainage pan and tube freezes up (behind the back panels in the freezer) and when that gets full it spills over too the bottom of the fridge and keeps building up until you notice.
  • Un-plug fridge and put your food in coolers or another fridge.
  • Defrost the freezer, remove the ice from the bottom.
  • Remove the back panel/s (in the freezer).
  • Check the drainage pan. If it is iced up, you'll have to carefully remove the ice and check the drainage hole.
  • If the hole is iced up, so is the first 1-2 inches of the plastic tube leading to the main drainage pan behind and under the fridge.
  • You can use a hair drier to speed up defrost.
  • To defrost the hole and tube I used round ended metal (nut pics or beater attachment ends- avoid sharp objects) heated up in boiling water and gently forced down into the hole and tube until defrosted.
  • Check flow(by pouring warm water) down and looking behind and under fridge(with flashlight) to see if flowing into main drainage pan.
  • Turn up your freezer temp and check with a thermometer. Your freezer temp was probably set too cold
Mine is going on 5 months with no problem. If this continues, it might be the defroster.
Good Luck!

Whirlpool ET18NK fridge does not get cold but freezer is ok. The freezer portion is around 15 degrees, but the fridge wont get colder that about 53 degrees. The house was empty for about 6 months, and we...

If the fan is frozen this would be cause because something in the defrost system is bad. Or you could have a open motor. Make sure the door gasket is sealing.

the ice maker wont cycle untill the temp of the ice is around 10 degrees so if the freezer is at 15 or 20 due to some other malfunction then you will see the maker full of ice but it wont harvest and make another batch. so you could have a sensor bad, control malfunction, refrigeration issue, compressor, defrost system malfunction(you mentioned ice build up)

Fridge and Freezer losing cooling

we bought a f&p fridge freezer and in summer noticed it wasn't cooling and the freezer wasn't freezing, when the service guy came out he noticed our ducted air con was blowing onto the fridge, once we had redirected the air con outlet the fridge started working as normal, apparently f&p's work on air being convected around the cabinet of the fridge and air blowing on the fridge can effect the temperature of the convected air. hope this helps you or someone
