Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
I have been a Satellite Broadband dealer for 15 years and sell HughesNet among other brands. None of the systems are good for gaming and most won't do other things that require a stable latency like VOIP or VPN. Unfortunately there are many dealers that only care about sales and won't tell the customers that. The theoretical minimum latency is about 550 ms and actual latency can run up to about 2 seconds. The best system would be a commercial one like Skycasters where the latency and speeds are controlled but be prepared to pay several hundred to over $1000 per month for this service and then add on overage charges which can run a couple of hundred dollars per day. Satellite is a great internet source for email and general surfing when no other forms of high speed is available or for use as an emergency backup to another system.

A lot of people have problems playing online games with satellite internet. The problem is that while your download speed is usually okay, the upload speed to the satellite is too low and the latency (the time between when your computer sends a message and the satellite relays it to the other party) is way too high.
Unfortunately, you probably will not be able to play any kind of PS3 games online via HughesNet. Computer browser-based games would likely be okay, but your latency will be too high to connect to any PS3 game servers.
Good luck, and hope this is helpful!

We just got Hughesnet yesterday specifically to game. Got a ps3 too. Understand the latency prob, but have played pretty good at a couple of hotels with Hughesnet. So figured it'd be better than nothing. But, nat type changed to 3 and is restricting everything. Have tried everything to change it and can't. Ps and router techs all blame Hughesnet. Thinking it just doesn't work to play. We can sign in and download updates and ad-ons, but no playing.

It is probably just due to network problems with PSN. They dont have everything fixed quite yet.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
New users get to try the service completely Free afterwhich it costs $6 per call and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
