You'll first need to plug your computer into the router, which I'll assume you've already done. Next, open an internet browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox/Safari), type your IP address into the address bar(where you normally type a website address like into). If you're unsure of your IP address, click here to find out. Copy the long number into your address bar and press enter. This should bring up your router's configuration page. Here there should be an option somewhere to change the password to your router.

Good Luck, KoBaC

Configure Home Network- 8 digit PIN?

There are two ways of finding it:
1st - Check the sticker or box of router. You can find it near the serial number or mac address written. It is mentioned as PIN Number.
2nd - Login in the router page with default password and you can find it on settings page.

I need an 8 digit pin number for my wpn824 wireless router. I am trying to set up Web disk. There is no 8 digit pin number on the router or the packaging.

the 8 digit pin is usually located on the sticker under the router. it is labeled as security pin. or anything that is related to that phrase.

My network setup is asking for a pin number that is on my router. Obviously there is no pin number for this particular router and my network is asking for a 4 or 8 digit number. What do I do?

If its asking for a pin number I would check the sticker on the bottom of the router. it may have the router PIN you are looking for. If not trying typing in your internet browser address bar and find the network settings and see if there is a pin set up, if so write it down or clear it to have no PIN

My motorola surfboard router/modem has a PIN that is too long to set up a wireless network at home. I try to start one and it says to enter the 8 digit pin printed on the routers label but when I look for...

I had the same problem and i think i remember how to solve it. When you are ready to enter the pin # (the one that has to be 8 digit long0, ignore it and instead click in the bottom part of the window where it say something like 'enter key phrase/password instead' and then it will ask you to enter one. The password is listed in the label on the bottom of the router. It is the long one under 'WPA-PSK." I hope that helps.

Hi i am trying to connect my wireless router to run my lap top however it is asking me for a pin number that should be on the bottom of the modem and i dont see a pin number?

Welcome to FixYa! I believe that when you're trying to connect wirelessly it's not asking for the network key or other users are able to connect to your network. Please follow the steps below for you to be able to make your connection secure.

1 Open your web browser, type " " into the address bar and hit "Enter."

2 Use "admin" as the username in the pop-up box and leave the password blank or try to use " admin" as the password as well.

3 Connect to the Internet and click on "Internet Setup."

4 Select your connection type from the drop-down menu. Choose "DHCP" for cable modems or "PPPoE" for most DSL modems. If you are unsure of these options, check with your ISP.

5 Set a service set identifier (SSID) to identify the router and change the password.

6 Encrypt your wireless connection using a Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key. Under the "Wireless Security" option, enter a passphrase and click "Generate." This will generate a password which will need to be used by any client connecting to your router

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

I am trying to secure my wireless router and am asked for a PIN number. My router is a WRT54G2. On the bottom, there is a Model Number, Serial Number, MAC address number, and another with a connection...

I think none of those numbers will help you. I suggest that you download the directions from the Linksys site. if the following does not get you handled, please get back to me.

I have included the points that I think should be changed:

Wireless Router

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below.

Things to set:

Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes.

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID.

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

Fogotten security pin

Are you trying to connect to the wireless network on a WINDOWS VISTA / 7 computer? Sometimes on the windows vista computer , it will ask you for the PIN number when you try to connect to the wireless network. On the same window at the bottom you will find the option " I want to connect to the network or I want to enter the key manually". If you click on that option , it will ask you for the security key.
If you don't know the security key, then you will need to check the settings of the router. You will need to open the router set up page where you can check all the wireless settings of teh router. If you want, you can also find the PIN on the wireless settings page of the router.
If you are trying to connect any other wireless device to the network and it is asking you for the PIN then you will need to open the set up page of the router and under wireless settings you will find PIN.

We just added a second laptop to our home network and in setting up the laptop for wireless it asked for a pin number for our linksys wireless router but the pin number is not on the unit and we don't have...

Yes this is very straight forward

open internet explorer on your computer which is connected to wireless router.

browse to your gateway address. The default for linksys is usually

then it will ask for username and password

linksys default username: (leave this blank)
linksys default password: admin

if that doesn't work try username: admin
password: admin

Once logged into console you should be able to see wireless security settings

Click on that and it will take you through to a page with your security settings on there you will see a wireless key or network key or wireless passphrase.

simply make a note of the key as its written. (If the password is masked or *********** out ) which is the case on some of the newer linksys devices you can simply overtype the password with a new one, bear in mind that you will have to then update any clients that normally connect to the wireless network with the new password. So thats all computers, laptops, DS's Wii's Playstations & Xbox's.

******I'd STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT change the wireless password / security key over wireless you should always do it using an RJ45 ETHERNET cable connected to your computer and the router. *********
