I mean that the laptop (either in xp or in W7, I tried with two laptops separately), doesn´t recognize the Garmin as a device, when I plug in that unit via USB in the laptop in the "mass storage" mode. So, I cannot access to the maps files. I ´ve already downloaded the latest drivers, but the problem remains. Is there any other way to access to the Garmin directory through the laptop? I will be looking foward to your comments

Your recomendations were followed previously to my 1st post (in fact, you should access to any devices in that way, cameras, mp3, etc).. I´ve never accessed the Garmin, because I´ve just bought it in the US. I just simply want to install the Argentina´s maps, but first I must uninstall the US maps, because thte flash memory of the Garmin is completely full. The problem is that the laptop don´t recognize the Garmin as a device (i.e. like a camera). I supposed that it was a driver problem, but it don´t. After that, I ve tried with Xp instead of W7, but the problem remains. Once i could get the Garmin in my laptop, I solve the rest.

No way. I´ve already done that procedure, but the thing is that I can t get to the Garmin folder, because the unit is not recongnized as a disk by the computer. There won t be problems downloading the new maps, but first i must find space into the Garmin to allow that which is full with the US maps, then I have to remove the current US files that you are refering in your post . You told me about specific software that allowed me to reach the Garmin folder in my computer. That s my concern, because it won t work with the windows explorer as I ve explained before. So, how can I access to the Garmin folder?

Welcome to FixYa!
Plug the DNX7140 to the computer then restart your computer with the device still plugged in.
"the laptop don t allow me to access to the maps files " - what exactly do you mean by this? If I'm not mistaken, the map files should be in the Garmin folder.
Thanks for using FixYa. Have a great day.

If it says "mass storage", then it should be accessible using the "windows explorer" (in Win7, the folder icon on the toolbar near the start button). In XP, it should be accessible using the "my computer" or the "windows explorer" as well.

Can you describe me how do you usually access the garmin folders before?

    Keep me posted.

It seems that the DNX 7140 and DNX 9140 has not been built for computers to recognize it the usual way like other electronic devices. It can only be recognized by doing specific functions and by using specific Garmin programs such as the Garmin Communicator when updating North American maps and Garmin Map Source for loading 3rd party maps. (Garmin does not provide maps other than North America, for authorized 3rd party Garmin compatible maps, go to http://www.garmin.com/us/maps/third_part... )

Use Map Source for loading new Maps: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_...

Tutorial on how to use Map Source: http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapso...

Somehow, some of the DNX-7140 users have successfully accessed the Garmin folder by doing the following: (note: this does not guarantee to work 100%)

    1. Connect a USB thumb drive in the computer.

    2. Copy the new map to a USB thumb drive (the image file)

    3. Connect the DNX-7140 to the computer.

    4. Select mass storage option.

After the process from 1 to 4, it should now be accessible. (Again, this does not work all the time)

    Thanks again for using FixYa.

    Have a great day.

    Continuation:

    5. Copy the map image file (usually "gmapsupp.img") from the USB thumb drive to the garmin gps folder.
    6. Unplug the gps from the computer.
    7. Go to map options, you should be able to select the new copied map.
    8. Select it.

I just installed a kenwood dnx7140. Everything is

Have you checked to see if the sub amp is turning on. Check to make sure you have at least 12 volts on your power as well as your remote turn on (Blue/White on radio harness).
If everything is hooked up correctly, it is possible that the preout is turned off. Some headunits have selectable preouts. If so you should be able to turn the sub on and off in the menu.
Hope this helps

I own the Kenwood DNX7140 navigation system. Periodically the screen says "Software Update Complete" and teh system locks up. I have never updated teh software though. What is wrong with it?

You need to update your software. Garmin does this through a downloaded file you burn to a CD. You then do a firmware update to the Kenwood from the CD. Instuctions are on-line at:
