1 Answer

SONY rear projection 40" rear projection. It was in full working order untill recently when the picture went very dark. Adjustments to the brightness and contrast make very little difference.

You may have already found your problem since it is now mid January 2009, but we had the same thing happen t our 50 inch Grand Wega.  You will need to replace the light bulb.  Ours was still under warranty and was sent out to us for free.  The owners manual shows how to replace the bulb and also has the contact numbers for service.

SONY rear projection TV - Whites have started looking "snowy"

This is your Picture tubes getting very weak.( low in emission ) You have three in there and I guarantee they are no longer available so I would start thinking about investing in a new set, but use that one until you can't stand it anymore.

Tv will not turn on

For dark picture I need to ask one question, How long ago you replaced its lamp? one year, two years?

Picture brightness is depends on lamp in LCD rear projection (DLP) TVs and if lamp got weak in generating light, you will see dark picture.

I would recommend to replace lamp and buy Sony original lamp from Sony Accessories Store.

Required lamp part number is as follows..
F93087500 LAMP BLOCK ASSY XL-2400
and price is $200
Good luck.

White arched lines appearing on dark/black screens.

it sounds like you are seeing the vertical retrace for all three colors together (white). Its possible that all three screen adjustments (red, green, blue) are off, but I suspect a problem with the screen power supply.
there is also a recall on this set

What you need is the owners manual my friend. In here it will show you where to get to the lamp and how to change the lamp. Go to http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=KDF55WF655&LOC=3
to get a free copy of the OWNERS manual. Page 16 tells you how to do this. Good Luck
