Why does water leak out of bottom of iron base unit when ironing .could it be the filter unit ?

Probably not the filter.

If it is a new iron and the drops of water are excessive I would suspect it is faulty.

If the iron is well-used I would suspect it has a scale problem where localised scale build up is preventing some of the water from closely contacting the heated metal and turning to steam. This could be particularly true if you live in a hard water area.

Steam irons originally soon caused problems unless distilled or de-ionised water was used. It is reckoned modern irons can use tap water but hard water can still cause trouble.
A descaler additive might help but I haven't had good results in the past...

My rowenta progressive iron is leaking dark black water from where the cord retracts. What is causing this. Where is black water coming from?

The mountains of Mt. Fuji have blessed you. Just kidding, have you ever dropped this iron? Mold may be growing where there is a leak in the holding tank. Water and electricity do not mix, time for a new unit.

I have 1700W Rowenta Focus and it is fairly new and water won't stay in it. I pour water in and leaks out all around the sole of the iron. What is going on? It never has been dropped, fallen off anything...

Possibly one of two problems.

1. Water tank has a hole in it.
2. Filler tube that go's into tank has come off.

If you are handy and have the correct type screwdriver bits, you may be able to open the iron and have a look.

Other wise it's bite the bullet and buy a new one. Wallmart or similar do some quite good cheep electrical stuff.

Suddenly began leaking and overheating, such as too hot for demin but only set of min. Last time this happened I bought a new iron. The new one has been dropped - last year but nothing recently and this...

The iron started leaking from front and back. took iron back to Wal Mart and got another iron and it did the same thing. I cannot use the iron because it is hard to hold the steam almost burn your hands because it leaks a lot all over my cloths . I was so disgusted with the iron until I just put it in the corner and bought another iron from wal mart. I did not know if they would take the iron back , because I had it for a bout (3) months.

Leaks Rust!

You either have a lot of iron in your water or you bought a used iron. Eitherr way, run a mix of 15% wite vinegar to 75% water. use it until gone and refill with plain water and run that through. Try using distilled or filtered water.
