Question about Radio Communications

1 Answer

Purchased CB radio kit from Maplin with TTI brand CB and mag mount aerial in kit. Installed new CB's using a cigarette lighter adapter which plugs into lighter. CB comes on fine and this appears to be working okay. However, unable to pick up any CB chat. Drove around the local area but, not a murmer. I appreciate that this may not be the best bit of kit in the world but driving past multiple lorries with CB aerials on, figured i would pick up some chatter on channel 19. Any ideas/recommendations? Has the squelch set to Auto but, have tried manually but no greater success.

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

How do you get started... where do you plug in the gps in my toyota avalon? I have a 5045

Hello, If i understand correctly, you are just trying to set up your Magellan gps into your Toyota Avalon. First of depending on the kit you got for the bracket to hold the unit, it normally will have a suction cup, that secures the bracket, put the bracket on the window, normally to the right of driver view and toward bottom of window, then after putting mounting (suction cup and gps holder) on window, then mount gps in to bracket, now your gps is mounted at this point on window. Now, of course you have to plug it in. GPS kits when you buy them normally have a 110 power plug ( to plug into home outlet) and some will have with the kit, a 12 volt cigarette type of plug to plug in your car (which is 12 volt power) In your home of course you can charge the gps off your 110 power, and gps will run off internal battery for a few hours, but you will find out like with mine, that your better off to plug into car for power, because the internal battery does not last very long. I have a Magellan as well, and they are great units. NOW this being said, if you did not get with your gps a 12 volt car adapter for your gps, you will have to get one. ( unless you have a power converter, which takes 12 volt and converts it to 110 power, but that's another story and only recommended for devices that do not have 12 volt adapter capabilities)

In conclusion if you have the 12 volt adapter to plug in your gps, all you do is find your cigarette lighter, take out your cigarette lighter, put in glove box for storage, and plug your gps in your cigarette lighter, or any other 12 volt cig lighter plugin. That's all there is to it, and now you have power running off your car. Thanks mike , hope this helps

First make sure you are grounded well. Second do you have an inline fuse on your power wire? If so check that it did not blow. Even if it looks good throw another 3 amp fuse in to make sure. Also make sure your power source is actually hot and make sure the fuse in the panel fuse box for your power source has not blown. Also are you using the cigarette lighter? If so make sure the fuse to the cigarette lighter has not blown. Last you can try a new power wire. If you try all of these to no avail you more than likely have a radio issue. Good luck.

Take a deep breath and start over! The best way to power this little radio is probably through the cigarette lighter or 12vdc accessory jack. It is simple and straight forward and no fuse box or negative ground wires to worry about. Go the Radio Shack, purchase an adaptor (cig lighter type) and hook it up to your radio wiring being careful to watch polarity. You may have to have your ignition on to run the radio, but that is much safer that maybe blowing up the unit.

Unless you are running a larger more powerful unit or an amp, there is no added benefit to hooking the radio into the fuse box.

Have cobra 29 nw ltd keeps blowing fuses inline and in cigarette lighter adapter adapter is 10 amps and inline is no more than 5 amps

This is an easy fix if you are comfortable soldering.

You must have hooked it up backwards. Big problem when using a cigarette lighter adapter. You have to be careful, if you hook a radio up backwards you blow the polarity protection diode.

  • Go to radio shack and buy an N1004 diode.
  • Open the radio
  • Look towards the back right of the radio for a black diode D23. it will probably look burnt, but not always.
  • Use a soldering wick to remove the solder holding the diode in.
  • Remove it, and replace the diode making sure its going in the same direction as the old on. Strip on the side the triangle is pointing.
  • Solder it in.
  • Test the radio
That should do it.

Make sure you are careful to hook the radio up to power corrctly.

Transmitting problem on motorcycle

  • Make sure you run the CB directly to the battery. What you are hearing is the alternator whining. Even then sometimes a low pass filter may be necessary. Make sure the chassis of your CB is grounded with a copper braid strap too.

  • Hope this helps.
