Question about Apple MacBook Pro Notebook

1 Answer

I just bought a top-end MacBook Air 13.3" 4 GB/256 GB for presentations. I also have a Dell M410HD projector, also quite new (a few months old), which works great with the two PCs (one new, one old) I used pre-Mac. The Dell projector was bought because it supports XGA projection, and I need sharp images and great color in my presentation. Problem: When I hook up the Air to it, the color is terrible on the projector. It's quite dark, not at all sharp. I've got the miniVGA hooked up to the VGA cord to the overhead, it's mirrored, and the prefs show it's projecting at 1280x(800? Don't remember), 60 hz. I've changed mirror to not mirror; changed hz, changed resolution, and always the same. I've tried hooking up to a nice monitor from the Mac via VGA and it looks great, so I know the connector works as does the cord. The Dell projector also has settings, which I've tried (different resolutions, contrast, brightness), and nothing has worked. I've also had all shut down, hooked up, and then turned on, and no significant difference. Help! This hardware was supposed to work well together, and Apple was no help on the phone (they blame the projector).

VCitron, the only thing I didn't try was to make sure the projector is not set to Eco mode, which compromises color and brightness. Check it out and let me know.

I'm about to buy this one instead and pray it works:

Hey, check to see if the projector/bulb is set to Eco mode. That's the only thing I didn't try. Let me know. Eco mode often makes the color and brightness compromised.

I'm now looking at this one and praying it works:

They (Apple) might be right. It could be that the projector is damaged, like the bulb, or it could be incompatible with your computer, but I don't think that is the case. Try taking the projector to a computer repair place.

Thanks for that. The projector is working fine w/PCs and other Macs, it seems, so I know it has to do with the Macbook Air.

We have exactly the same problem. When we go into the mac display settings and calibrate to fix the color, the dell auto adjusts and turns something half-way OK back into junk. This has not happened with other projectors so there must be some interesting communication mismatch.

Is the Macbook Air enough if I onlz want to use for private leisure?

It's a good product but has it's limitation in terms of no CD/DVD drive, lack of USB ports, quite a small hard drive (80 GB as opposed to 500GB for a low end Macbook Pro), less RAM and smaller screen (11.3 inch as opposed to 13 inch for a Macbook Pro). For another 200 dollars you could buy a macbook pro which has higher specs.

Can i hook up a macbook to this projector?

sure can!

There are a few options. Check out the apple website for a list of adapters.

Your best bet, depending on what macbook you have, would be a mini-DVI (plugs in to your macbook) to a DVI (plugs into the projector computer input)

The adapters are quite cheap at around $15 adn this will make the projector work just like an extra monitor connected to your macbook

Good luck!!

I have a new mac pro and I am trying to use it with a Dell LCD projector. It shows the homepage without any text and won't show anything else.

What do you mean by "shows the home page"? What home page?
Normally you will see your mac's desktop (or, on some models) you will see your desktop background without any icons. If that happens the projector is acting as an extended screen.
If you want to project exactly what you see on the laptop's make sure that mirroring is switched on in the monitors panel of system preferences.

Macbook recognizes dell projector, but not vice versa

Your Macbook should automaticaly find the best resolution, if everything was OK. Is there any HDMI input on the dell projector? What projector is it? Is there is an HDMI input, you can use a HDMI to mini DVI cable: better picture and sound than VGA, and will probably solve your problem

Mac driver need for dell projector

You shouldn't need a driver as long as the Mac video system resolution can be matched by the Dell projector. Considering you are using a Mac Pro I don't think this will be an issue. Have you tried it and it didn't work?
