Question about Refrigerators

I just replaced my GE Smartwater Filter in my refrigerator and now the water will barely flow. I had no problems before. Could it be the filter?

It could be the filter however, lets look at somethings first.

Did you pull the ref. out for any reason lately? If so then when pushing the unit back into place a water line could have been kinked.

Did you shut the water of before replacing the filter? You should not have to do this however, some people do. If you did ensure that the valve is turned all the way back on. Try closing it again and re-opening it.

Did you run the water disp for 5 - 10 min. after replacing the filter? Generally this is the problem. The filter needs to be filled with water and when the old one is removed it allows air into the water line. This all needs to be flushed out by running the water.

Ge smartwater filtration system has slow moving water


You have to prime air out of new filters. Also if you have a reverse osmosis water system, your water pressure may not be sufficient.
You may have to bypass the filter. Most fridges come with a plug that will fit where the filter goes. good luck

The GE GXRLQR is the correct *replacement* filter for the following "Smartwater" single stage filtration and exterior refrigerator icemaker systems:
  • GE GXRLQ
  • GE GX1S50F
  • GE GQ1S50F
This filter is rated for only 750 gallons / 6 months of use (typical fridge with ice maker & water service). Most home faucets will deliver about 6 gallons / minute which roughly translates to about 2 hours of running water.


The GE FQSLF works with the following for the following Dual Stage Under Sink filtration systems:

  • GE GQSL55F
  • GE GXSL55F
Because there are 2 filters, they will last nearly 2x as long as the GE GXRLQR. and would likely be better suited to serving a faucet which will pass much more water than a fridge ice maker & chilled water dispenser would.

The real question is: Which GE filtration SYSTEM (not filters) do you have?

Very slow water flow into ice maker and almost no flow from water dispenser. Replaced filter, did not fix problem.


HI if your using a saddle valve to connect your water to to main water line, this is the problem either switch to a regular T-reducer or try to drill the hole bigger in the saddle valve, those wil restrict the flow to your refrigerator.

Replaced my GE double wide refrigerator SMARTWATER FILTER #GWF With a which is supposed to be better. Yet, the water stream has cut down to half. Do I need the adapter collar for this newer model? ...


I have exactly the same problem. Replaced my GWF filter with the "new improved" MWF filter and the same thing happened. Tried replacing the filter not once, but twice - same low water flow. If you install the bypass plug the water flow is normal, so don't bother checking for water restrictions, bad hoses, tanks etc.. My refridgerator is a GE Profile 26 cubic foot purchased in 2004. I'm afraid these MWF filters don't work well in older models.

GE smartwater filter (model GXRLQR) stopped working...help!


These replacement filters (GXRLQR) are FLAWED straight out of the factory. The problem is in the 2 little "teeth" nubs that stick up near the center circle of the filter. When the filter is twisted and inserted, these teeth push up on a tiny black spring loaded valve in the body of the filter, alowing water to pass through up and out the spigot. The flaw is that the "nubs" are too short and do not push open the spring valve far enough, reducing flow to a semi-trickle, even with a brand new filter. GE seems to think this is not a problem.

Solution=stick a $0.25 garden hose rubber washer in the top of the filter and screw it in. You may have to try a few times to get it to work and seat properly. When it works, you'll immediately get a nice super flow of water. Better than upgrading to a $200 filter system recommended by GE...

common low flow is a kinked line or a bad water valve, the solioid valve has a filter that may be dirty. then go from there

In replacing a GE SmartWater filter on my GE profile side by side refridge the water will not flow thru new filter, why??


first thing is to make sure it's installed in proper direction. Those have arrows or other marks to indicate inflow/outflow. Please check that first.
