The problem can be due to a ballast malfunction or due to a faulty DMD board. The first thing to try would be to measure the output DC voltage from the ballast to see if its OK. Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 May 23, 2011

No. the thick wires from the lamp will plug into a board known as ballast. The point from where the wires come are the DC output pins. Measure the output voltage at that point with the tv(you will have to disassemble and have the board on a desk or something before hand). The service manual indicates that the output at the point should be 325-340V. Let me know how much it reads

If the set has a lamp, I assume it is a rear projection TV with an LCD panel.

There are several possibilities. I presume you have already investigated the brightness setting in the TV control menu. That leaves the following:

If you have a smoker in the house, you may have tar buildup on the optics. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning the front screen. If the results are still not satisfactory, you may have to clean the internal optics. Caution: make sure the set is completely cool, and unplug it before cleaning the lenses and plates inside the set. Do not apply the lens cleaning liquid directly to the optics; there is a risk of dripping it into electrical or electronic parts. Apply it to a soft lens cleaning cloth, then use that to wipe the optical parts. If you removed a noticeable amount of tar from the front of the screen, you may also need to clean the curved mirror assembly that lines the upper back of the set, as well as the back of the projection screen.

If you have an oxidized terminal in the lamp holder, the bulb may not run at full brightness. On many sets this would generate a lamp error, but it may not be the case on yours. Remove the new lamp and inspect the terminals. Polish them if they are tarnished.

The ambient light in the room may be too bright, or the cover of the light level sensor on the set may need to be cleaned if it has one.

There could be a problem in the lamp regulation circuit besides the previously mentioned ambient light sensor. At this point you're getting into the electronics, and a service manual would be highly desirable.

    Hello
The set you have purchased is a very old model. Nothing can be done by you without proper experience in servicing this type of TV. In service manual, there are self diagnosis process described, but all cannot be typed here. There are some codes to enter into its service menu and are described in the service manual. But proper care must be taken when entering ito it. You have been cheated I thinks. What can I do, as you are not aware in electronic circuit boards and circuits. A wll expeienced service personal only can do something to this set. soemtimes he also may helpless. OK

DLP television picture not clear (blurry) and dark.

Hello
If picture is dark in DLP TVs, its lamp should be taken care of. In some lamps, the reflecting side coating of lamp will be bubbled, preventing sufficiant light to fall on DLP chip. Replace the lamp if necessary. Check it first, taking it ouside. OK.

Sounds like you may have the wrong lamp. Make sure you purchased a Philips lamp that's 100% compatible with your television model. Philips pioneered that lamp, so naturally they make 100 different types for DLPs and LCD projections.

You may have an elliptical lamp instead of parabolic. The lamp for your TV should read P22h.

Very dark picture. Video adjustments do not help.

I would check the lamp first. Open the lamp door to see if there is cloudiness near the stem of the lamp. If so, replacing the lamp should make the brightness like when you first bought it.

Picture is dark

Adjust video settings:
  1. Press Wega Gate
  2. Select Settings
  3. Highlight Video
  4. Press + to select
  5. Adjust/increase the brightness.
  6. Press Wega gate to exit.
If picture is still dark, you need to replace the lamp again. Sony recommends that you replace the lamp:
  1. After approximately 8,000 hours of use.
  2. When the screen becomes dark or the color becomes unusual.
  3. When the lamp indicator on the front of the TV flashes.

Dark picture!

The Lamp it self, the Ballast, or the Power Supply that powers the Ballast. Even a combination of the Lamp and Power Supply is a common problem. If you have not replaced the Lamp since you have owned the set I would replace that first. The Lamp has about a 3000 to 5000 hour life span.
Hope this helps,

Tv will not turn on

For dark picture I need to ask one question, How long ago you replaced its lamp? one year, two years?

Picture brightness is depends on lamp in LCD rear projection (DLP) TVs and if lamp got weak in generating light, you will see dark picture.

I would recommend to replace lamp and buy Sony original lamp from Sony Accessories Store.

Required lamp part number is as follows..
F93087500 LAMP BLOCK ASSY XL-2400
and price is $200
Good luck.
