Hi,
Welcome to Fixya. WD sent a cord that was too long. Before you format that hard drive or do troubleshooting please do try a shorter USB cable. Because it has to do with voltage drop recived to and from the port. This is a known issue with WD external drive.
You can also refer to the link below about the steps that i provided you.
WD is not recognized
Thanks for using Fixya.

Try opening up Disk Management from the control panel (or type it into your search from Windows 7)
What may be happening is that the drive is trying to use a drive letter that is being used by another drive.

If you see the drive in disk management, try right clicking on the drive and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths" Option......choose an unused drive letter and see if that helps.

Also, try removing the driver out of the device manager and have it reinstall it.

Sounds maybe like it is either a drive letter conflict or Windows is having trouble loading a driver. If it is still failing, try it on another computer or maybe try a linux boot CD to see if a different operating system would recognize the drive.

Hello,

Is this your first time of using this external drive with your computer?

Connect the external drive to another computer and observe if it's going to work perfectly on that computer.

Which ever the case ma be, here is what you need to do on your computer;

Insert the external drive into your computer

Go to device manager.

Go to the name of the external drive.

Right click on the external drive and click 'Uninstall"

Allow the external drive uninstall from your computer.

If possible uninstall every other device under the "Universal serial bus controller (usb).

Once this is done, disconnect/remove the external drive from your computer.

Restart your computer.

Wait a while for the computer to boot computer. Also whatever you have uninstalled from the device manager, might install automatically. Which ever the case maybe, make sure your computer has finished booting or installing any device before you attempt to insert the external drive into the usb.

Now insert the external drive and wait for the computer to install the external drive, then observe if it will open this time around.

By now it should open. But if it doesn't open, please let me know so that I may direct you further on what next to do.

I wish you good luck.

Regards.

    Hello,

this points at the drive. The drive is the cause of the problem. Can you disassemble the drive? Open the drive's cover. You will find the hard disk inside. There is every tendency that the drive inside has shifted from it's right position as a result of moving/caring the drive from one place to another. Remove the hard disk inside the case, fix it back in,couple the drive's case then try again. I hope you know what i mean......

Yes, you can open it carefully by prying the case with a flat screw driver. It won't damage the hard drive because it's inside the case. You might need to apply some force to take the case apart. if you don't have the confidence of doing this, you can ask a family or friend to assist you. (Two heads are better than one)...

Problem with ASUS P5QC Motherboard, cannot detect any usb device (hard discs). The lights on the devices show that there is power, but Windows 7 cannot 'see' them. Keyboard, mouse and usb stic

If same usb port work with other devices then suggest to check the disk management first then device manager. If it is not listed in disk management or you are not able to access it then open device manger and check under disk drives. If it is not listed in device manger then I suggest to test the external harddisk on another PC. If that also fails then you either have a bad hard disk.

It's likely you now have a damaged partition. It's a common problem. If you don't care about the data just reformat.

Or you can try http://findandmount.com/

I've had my external hard drive My Book Essential for a while now and had no problems with it until now. I would usually plug it in and the pop up screens would ask what you would like to do like...

The fact that it displays a '0% used' indicator probably means that somehow the data that you have hitherto stored on your external hard drive has been erased. This might not necessarily be the case, so don't panic yet.

The first thing I would try doing is reinstalling any software that came with your WD My Book. Not many external HDDs require additional software to run properly, but if yours does, then I strongly recommend reinstalling that first. I would then try using Windows Disk Manager to see if your computer is recognizing the G: drive as a hard drive, because I have had to use disk manager when I've added additional internal hard drives to my computer. If neither of these work [or you could not find the CD your My Book came with] I would search around online for driver or software updates available for your device.

One thing that I noticed while typing my suggestion for you is that before you attempting using the back up feature on your My Book, the drive for the My Book was (G:) but after you attempted the back up process the drive is indicated as (H:). I think that what might have happened was that when you attempted backing up the My Book, it was partitioned into a storage section (G:) and a section in which the backup data is stored (H:). If you can find and access it, the (G:) drive is likely to still contain all the data that you previously assigned to it.

If this doesn't help, I apologize, but I sincerely hope that your problem will be resolved.

I overvolt the drive with the wrong adapter for my book essential and now the light keeps blinking. what should i do? can i retrieve back the files?

First of all, all external hard drivers are actually hard drive themselves, they're only outside your computer. you can still retrieve your files using the conventional way by removing the hard drive and connecting it to your computer. If your not comfortable doing this then have someone open the computer and the external hard drive for you. Usually if you'll drain the flea power, this is done by removing the adapter from the wall outlet while the device is on, will somehow correct the problem. If not then the power supply regulator is damaged and you will need to replace it. You can still use the hard drive that's inside you My Book Essential device only if you still want that hard drive to act as your back up then you will need a hard drive enclosure. you can buy this from any computer shop.

MY WD can't recognize by my pc but last week i use it but there no problem but when i plug it again today in my pc the book are not be read and theres no icon that can be seen in the HARD DISK DRIVERS BUT...

Device Manager only says that the disk is getting AC power, and that the "data" cable is connected, and that Windows has recognized the specific device-information (that it is a disk-drive, and that the capacity of the disk-drive has been recognized).
Device Manager does not say that the "spinning" part of the disk-drive is still spinning, nor that there are any I/O errors (trying writing with a pen onto greased paper -- not everything you write can be read).

Try connecting the MyBook to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting the MyBook to a different computer.
If it still is not "readable", then you have a few options:

* if the warranty still is valid, exercise the warranty, to get it repaired/replaced,
* disassemble the case, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed
* buy a replacement disk-drive, connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and close the case, to create a "new" external disk-drive.

WD 640gb my book not seen in my computer on my desk top, it seen

1. this is usually due to a usb drive being disconnected improperly.
2. the drive may still be working but the usb electronics in the drive case may be malfunctioning.
3. You may have to take the drive out of said case and plug it into another usb drive case.
4. you can remvove the drive from the usb case and put it in a docking station to read the information.
I hope this helps.

New external Hard drive

Open up My Computer and see if there is a new hard drive listed there. It should be automatically detected by your computer, you just need to know where to find it.
