How do I replace the ignition switch on my 74 MGB

After removing the column covers, (screws in holes underneath) The 2 unslotted studs holding the ignition and steering lock assembly onto the column are anti-theft screws. They will turn by hitting them on the edges with a hammer and small sharp chisel - counter clockwise.

On a 1974 chevy cheyenne truck the ignition will turn all lights on and then will not ignite the starter .i replaced starter and still does nothing

When you replaced the starter did you also put a new solenoid on it?
I would suspect the fusible links. There are 2 down on the wire harness going to the starter. They are a round piece of black rubber, maybe 1/2 inch long on a wire close to the solenoid. You should see 2 of them. You can either replace them, with a wire 2 sizes smaller, or just cut them out and splice the wires together.

I cannot get the plastic around the steering column off a 1985 jetta to replace the ignition. can you help with answers to remove this and the lock assy

    1. Remove the steering wheel, then remove the steering column covers.
    2. Remove the turn signal and wiper switches.
    3. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring.
    4. On some models, the hole in the lock body for removing the ignition lock cylinder was not drilled by Volkswagen. To make the hole, use the following measurements in conjunction with the illustrations. Drill the hole where "a" and "b" intersect on the lock body. The hole should be drilled 0.19 in. (3mm) deep.

      1974-77 Dasher-a= 0.45 in. (11.5mm) b= 0.32 in. (8mm) 1975-76 Rabbit, Scirocco-a= 0.43 in. (11mm) b=0.43 in. (11 mm) 1977-89 Rabbit, Jetta, Scirocco and 1978 and later Dasher, Quantum and Fox-a= 0.47 in. (12mm) b= 0.39 in. (10mm)

    1. Remove the lock cylinder by pushing a small drill bit or piece of wire into the hole and pulling the cylinder out. It might be easier to insert the ignition key, turn it to the right a little and pull on it.

    To install:
    1. Insert the lock cylinder into the housing with the key in the cylinder.
    2. While gently turning the key side-to-side, press the cylinder in to the stop. It should click into place.
    3. Temporarily fit the steering wheel onto the splines, then make sure the column locks and unlocks smoothly.
    4. Install the switches, column covers, wiring and the steering wheel.
    5. Connect the battery cable.

I just purchased a 1989 chevy cheyenne but was told the turn signal does not work. I was told it was a switch in the steering column...Is that fairly easy to get to and fix?

To perform this repair you need to remove the steering wheel. there will then bee two or three screws holding the mechanism in place. down towards the bottom of your steering column you will find the wiring that you needs to disconnect. Pull the wiring up and out and install the new signal switch in reverse order.

Cant get key switch out of housing, on a 1974 chevy pick up.Trere are no screws or clips visible.

If you mean remove the ignition tumbler from the steering column, you will have to remove the steering wheel and lock plate, then you will need to remove the turn signal lever and screws, and then pull the turn signal switch up and out of the way, you should then be able to see the housing for the ignition tumbler down in the steering column. Look at the tumbler housing and there should be a small slot towards the end of the housing that you can put a small standard screwdriver into and depress a locking latch that is built into the tumbler. When this latch is depressed you will be able to pull the ignition tumbler straight out of the column.
