Question about Craftsman 8.50 Torque Rating Rear Tine Tiller

1 Answer

I had a problem with my tiller going into reverse tilling. It goes into froward & reverse without tilling OK. But I have to be very careful when engaging the tines, mostly reverse tilling. It sometimes locks up & the belt will not turn but the drive gear does, causing the belt to smoke heavily. Sometimes when you put the bar back to start tilling it seems to lock up & causes engine to shut off. Other times it works great. Have to be real careful when depressing engaging bar as it can feel tight & I know it is not going to work. Move lever a little & it will work. Is it in the gear box & if so I do I check it?

Usually there's a button in the center of the stitch dial you can push in to reverse it. Hold in to reverse, let go to keep going froward.

Dynamark model 53455100 runs fine, but won't till in forward (tills ok in reverse) Can you help

This machine runs reverse off of a different shaft (camshaft)
The problem is in the belt/pulley set up off of the crankshaft.
See if you don't have a bad belt or pulley. Make sure the belt is being tightened all the way.

Craftsman rear tine tiller will only go forward. The shift lever will not move to either the ''Till'' position or the ''Reverse'' position

Pretty common failure for all brands unfortunately. The transmission will have to opened up to determine the cause and it is not cheap to have done. Sorry

When going forward the tines are going in reverse

I've never seen one of these so excuse my ignorance. Is it possible that the cable to change from forward to reverse is out of adjustment? Can you go to where the cable attaches to the shifting mechanism, detach it and manually try to change from reverse to forward? Hope this helps. Good luck!

Tiller will go into every gear except forward/till..whats going on?

check the shift lever where it goes into the transmission. a lot of times, the lever will get sloppy where the roll pin goes through and it won't shift into till. sometimes you can drive the roll pin out, pull off the lever and peen the holes over. sometimes you have to drill the lever and shaft and put in a snug fitting bolt and nut. OR, the chain driving the tines is broken, and that means a new transmission. hope it's simple

Check under the metal or plastic cover just behind the engine. This covers the forward and reverse belts. Your belt either broke, jumped off fthe pulley, or needs a tension adjustment.
