Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

4 Answers

My Epson CX11NF is around 4 years old. Printed 11K ish pages on it. Always used genuine consumables. Recently it suddenly started spilling black toner inside badly. Only noticed this when replacing an unexpectedly used up black cartridge. It still appears to be spilling black toner, and the black is not applying itself to the printouts well, it is grainy/greyish. All other colours are fine. No errors are reported by printer, have opened and inspected dev roller, it seems fine (i.e. comparable to other coloured/working ones), as is the PCU as far as I can see, though I am not an expert. Basically as the problem applies ONLY to the black I cannot see how it is a PCU/fuser or any other common component. Epson support werent very helpful, am worried I have to scrap the printer as I cannot think of a fix for this. Please help.

Thanks iantechson but your answer is very general and explains very little - generic drum, laser or waste collector problems would affect ALL colours on CX11/C1100, they are all common components. ONLY the black is exhibiting a problem on my unit. Also I require a more specific Epson printer solution, I understand how lasers in general work.

    Please advise on why:
Black toner is spilling inside the machine. And ONLY black. This is not "normal" spillage, as the black toner is going down very fast - almost as if the printer cant get black to the paper so is just tossing more on.
Blacks are very weak/patchy on the prinout. ONLY blacks, other colours fine.

Obviously the above symptoms are related but which is cause and which effect ? The toner has been changed, so cartridge unlikely to be faulty. Dev roller is well/evenly covered in black toner, i.e. similar to coloured dev rollers which appear to be working.

The physical pathways of black and CMY within this printer are identical as far as I know, so why just black ?
I am sure this unit does treat black in a special way when printing though as many colour printers have separate black/cmy sensors etc separately.

Does anyone on fixya have answers specific to an Epson printer ? General comments suchs as "try another toner cartridge" are not helpful. I already have (see posting).

  • Majid Anwar May 17, 2011

    Thanks Azraelsr
Yes, I had that feeling too.
If it were failing however, would the toner not struggle to attach to the developer roller ? It appears to be sticking well and evenly to the developer roller (dev roller is clearly visible in the printer when the PCU is removed)

Thanks, a specific explanation of the fault exaplaining the symptoms is much more useful than a "have you tried..."
In this case, I think the printer is as good as dead then, since replacement parts/qualified service is more than twice the cost of scrapping the printer and buying a new one... what an ecological waste !

If only the black toner is affected and the printing is blotchy then the developer unit for the black is failing : the toner no longer sticks to the paper and simply falls out - hardware fault, you will need to call a certified repairman to replace it since this is not a customer accessible part.

No, it will attach to the developer roll whatever its status since the developer roll is at a much higher voltage potential than the drum roll after the laser has written the page on it: -5 to 600 volts compared to the -100 volts on the drum. If the developer gets just -300 it will still attract a lot of toner, just that it will fall off. This will also happen with the drum if the initial charge of -5 to 600 volts is too weak - but that would have generated a warning message.

Unfortunately this is true for pretty much everything these days - the culture of use and discard.

First of all I suggest to clean the print head. At this official link you will find details for how to do this. Another solution is to try to locate and clean the "wasted box". This is an area that the remains of the toner are collecting. I'll try to locate details for this procedure, but in the meantime try to clean the print head as I mentioned before.

In case of a problem or clarification or further details needed, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
If you are satisfied, accept my solution.

Thanks and regards

Hi..
how much toner you use, if you just use one toner, I recommend that you use other toner to do the tests, common problems are coming from leaking toner cartridge.

hoppefully this can help u

Hi,
If you are experiencing a lot of spills from your laser toner, there could be two things that are not working properly.
First, the laser that neutralizes (or reverses) the charge on the black parts of the image, leaving a static electric negative image on the photoreceptor surface to lift the toner particles. The toner particles are negatively charged and it should attached to the neutralized part of the photosensitive drum. If the laser is not focused properly, this would cause more toner to attached and more will be spilled.
Second, When printing is complete, an electrically neutral soft plastic blade cleans any excess toner from the photoreceptor and deposits it into a waste reservoir, and a discharge lamp removes the remaining charge from the photoreceptor (Drum). If this is not working properly, this would cause spillage.
Yours may be worn out due to day to day usage for 4 years.
Hope this helps.

Just like you said, if it was the developer roller then why does the toner sticks on it evenly and well? The only way it will stick to the paper is as soon as it is hit by the laser. Theoretically, black requires more light as it absorbs light than any other color. If the laser is not emitting enough light, the toner is not neutralized resulting to more excess toner.

I have Epson Color laser printer CX11NF. It's developer toners run out and I need to purchase developer toners. But the whole colors of Epson products are more than 500.00 USD. I have to find...

Well, just googling for "epson cx11nf toner" gave me several results.

I personally like lasertechservices.com service and prices. They have "compatable" Epson cx11nf cartridges for $30.2 (black) to $33.95 (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta). If your a little more technically skilled, they also have toner refill kits for your printer for only $93.95 (all 4 colors, includes reset chips). Some printers don't allow you to "refill" the starter toners that came with it, so you may need to buy the cartridges the first time around (ask them, they will know).

I only mention the above site because I have used them myself for my printer(s), but there are many other companies doing the same thing. Try to choose a supplier with good technical support, in case you happen to run into any problems (as in, do they have a phone number to call, because "email only support" sucks).

Did you use Epson Genuine Cartridges?
ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Cartridges. !!!!!!!!
That sounds like your problem.

In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. I also Purchased a Brother MFC-240C All-In-One InkJet Printer. That also does not like Generic Print Cartridges. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc.

These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.

I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.

That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, and some are refillable. Some you can refill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......

I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. .

IF YOU ARE USING GENERIC CARTRIDGES, MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DISABLE THE INK MONITOR.

This is the only advice I can give you.

The next step would be to disassemble the Epson, and clean the Pads/Heads. Click on link below.:

I located a page on http://www.fixyourownprinter.com forum, which had plenty of details about similar issues.

Colors print blurred

I had that problem too. The weird thing was if I printed in black and white, the printing was fine. For me it looks like it was a new defective photoconductor unit. When I stuck the old one back in, no problem but my old one was producing 4 color dots all the way down the middle of the page. I went on eBay and brought a re-manufactured one (buy at your own risk) and the color printing was perfect again.

Epson Photo Stylus 950 not functioning

when ever you want to refill ink make sure, that the ink you refill decompressed for about 30min before you fix it into the printer.
Another thing is that you uninstall the software of the printer and reinstall again, and check the power supply of the printer is working perfectly.

Epson CX11NF printer problem-repair solved

To clear stripe....Open the front cover and look on the inside of the right side of the printer....There you will see a pictorial instruction showing the PRINTER HEAD cleaning procedures.

Follow them (remove tab/plug on right side, pull out on head lock arm on inside right, then fully pull out the printer head arm inside the port on the (outside of printer) right side.....Then push it back in, replace tab cover, push the lock back in (inside right-front) and problem solved.....

God Bless,

I've reviewed your printer design and suspect there is truely a "paper jam" located in the process feeder. If you will follow the directions for cleaning the printer head located on page 15/16 of the link below, I bet you will find your lost paper. This printer requires a long path of travel for the printed paper to eject. The printer head is about the half-way point of its travel, so this would be a great place to investigate.
