Hi,

If you could possibly post back the exact model number such as MX00 or EX00, then we can determine processor speed, probable memory, hard disk capacity and from there determine which OS would work. and how to go about it eve if the CD is also faulty.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I can't get the BIOS screen

You should only enter the BIOS immediately after booting the computer and never from within an operating system (i.e. Windows). On some computers you can enter the BIOS from a DOS prompt.
Several ways can be used to enter the BIOS/CMOS:
The video monitor will usually say on the bottom of the screen just as the computer is turned on, which key to use.
The BIOS information is stored in the CMOS hardware section of the motherboard and the contents are maintained by applying constant electrical current using a CMOS battery.
to enter the BIOS during boot up hold down one of the following keys:
  • Hold down the <Del> key
  • Hold down the <F1> key
  • Hold down the <F10> key
To enter the BIOS from a DOS prompt...( ...NOT from inside windows)
  • <Alt><Cntrl><Esc>
  • <Alt><Cntrl><Enter>
  • <Cntrl> <Alt> <A>
  • <Cntrl> <Alt> <S>
Compaq Presario - Press <Alt> <Ctrl> <Esc> at boot when you see the "Compaq" log in big letters

"<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

  1. Verify the boot.ini file is found on the computer by using a boot diskette or use your Windows CD to get to the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt.
  2. From this prompt edit the boot.ini, verify that it is pointing to the correct operating system, and that no anomalies are found within the file. Below is a listing of what to verify
  • If only one operating system is on the computer verify that the boot.ini only has one operating system listed. In some situations an alternate configuration line may be added for the same operating system, leaving the improper line.
  • Verify that the "default=" line as well as the operating system line are the same and that they are pointing to the correct operating system.
Verify that the computer has the hal.dll file

From the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt quickly determine if your computer has the "hal.dll" file by typing "dir hal.dll /s" at the prompt. If the computer returns a "File not found" message, the hal.dll has been deleted.

To recover this file boot the Windows operating system CD and choose the option to "Restore", "Repair", or "Recover." This option will prompt you for the Windows installation to use, the administrators password and will allow you to restore the proper file. At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.

expand C:\i386\hal.dl_ D:\windows\system32\

In the above example "D" would be the letter of your CD-ROM drive and "C" the letter of the drive your operating system is installed on. For example, your disc drive may be D: and your hard drive is likely C:.

16 Bit Vs 32 Bit Systems

You can't convert the program on the disk from 16 bit to 32 bit. However the 32 bit versions of Windows are supposed to include legacy support for 16 bit applications. What version of WIndows are you running? What's the exact errormessage you're getting?

However, I would recommend that you use a virtualization product called DOSBox. DOSBox is free software that runs older 16 bit applications on Windows (And other operating systems such as Linux) very well:

Load operating system on copaq armada

Insert the operatinng system cd. turn on the computer and boot from CD. In case its not booting from CD you need to go to BIOS and change the boot sequence. Once its booting from CD follow the instruction. Go to www.windowsreinstall.com and check for the steps.

When i turn my laptop on it wont load any thing it comes on saying problem loading operating system my lap top is compaq armada m300 thank you hope you can help

Try going in to the bios. I think it's power on and start tapping F2. See if your hard drive is there. If not, your hard drive died and you need a new one. If its there, try re-installing XP without formatting the drive. Hope you backed up your computer either way.

I think my compaq presario desktop has crashed

the computer is not recognizing the contents of your hard drive. you'll need a floppy with command.com, iosys.com and sysinfo.com on it. when inserted into the drive cmos looks here first. if you can access the cmos, check the search parameters to see what the computer boot up sequence is. you may want to change it to recognize the cdrom first, then the hard drive, then the A drive. I had a compaq armada that gave me the same message but I was able to reformat the drive off DOS 6.2 and changed the boot up sequence.

Just want some more memory

Getting additional memory The below commands will help allow your computer to load programs into memory more efficiently allowing you to have more memory for MS-DOS programs / games.
Ensure you have the below three lines at the beginning of your config.sys file.
DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
By placing the DOS=HIGH,UMB on the second line, this can, in some cases, save memory because it is loading DOS into upper memory before loading the memory manager. Additionally, the first and third lines cannot be loaded into high memory because these lines are the memory managers.
Load all your devices in your config.sys and autoexec.bat into high memory.

No operating system

Should be one of two things.
First: Make sure you remove the disk as Windows restarts as it may be on a continuous cycle even after Windows is done loading.
Second: You should check your hard disk for errors and have it repair any bad sectors. This is done by: Booting from XP and choose the Recovery console Once your in DOS (black screen
with a flashing cursor) type in the following commands exactly
" chkdsk /r "(this will check you hard disk for errors, it will take a
while depending on size of your hard disk). Then continue any additional disk repair options. If this all fails then the problem is with a bad hard drive and has to be replaced.

PC is frozen when I press WIN-key

Do you see the Hard Disk Light ON during the time your computer is frozen? If that is the case there maybe an issue with the Hard Disk Controller.

When you installed a new version of Windows XP, did you format your entire Hard disk? (Just to make sure that your computer doesn't have a viral infection?)

Also, is it that the computer freezes when you press Alt+Enter ...or is it like the computer freezes after you press the Windows Key and then Alt+Enter?

Have you tried the Alt+Tab Combination?
